48th Ward Aldermanic candidate Phil Bernstein this week launched a series of videos entitled "Bernstein Television" on his campaign website ( http://bernsteinforalderman.com/default.aspx ). Interesting. At least this guy has the guts to get out there and actually state his positions. For contrast, I looked at Harry Osterman's voting record at the site votesmart.org

Something that was interesting: they have a measure called "political courage" and here is the direct quote:
Representative Harry Osterman refused to tell citizens where he/she stands on any of the issues addressed in the 2010 Political Courage Test, despite repeated requests from Vote Smart, national media, and prominent political leaders.
This candidate has demonstrated 0% courage during the test.
If you don't believe it, go to the website and check it out yourself.
Maybe thats why everyone prefers attacking Phil, but never says anything about the accomplishments of Osterman.

Maybe thats why Phil is attacked repeatedly, but no one says a word about the accomplishments of Osterman.
Have you been to any of Osterman's many meet and greets? Have you tried to speak with him directly? Ask him how he stands on issues that are important to you? Not answering random questions posed by some website in Montana means absolutely nothing at all, and you're simply trying to throw dust in the air.

How about some honesty here? A guy posts his position on many topics on his website. And you say that "means nothing"?
According to the website, Phil asked Osterman two times to his face to debate, and he won't. So, because Phil hasn't asked Osterman at a meet and great what he thinks, Phil is the bad guy here.
Jeff, Osterman flunked the political courage test with a score of 0 out of 100. Because he won't state his position. Is that laudable?
At least Phil has the guts to say what he thinks.... in public.
Thats something the residents of this ward should applaud. Jeff, you have got your principles a little askew.
I think PB's video's are impressive, nice job John Redell. There is one thing though, PB states he wants to bring business into the ward, yet he has his business in another ward, is HE bringing his business to the 48th? Here's another question. Where is PB? Has anyone seen him or shook his hand when they were out and about? A person can be ANYTHING they want to be behind video's/Youtube, but what about front & center? Mingling with the residents? Where is he? And what the hell is that "Political Courage Test" anyway? Do all politicians have to take it and if they don't, does that mean they have no courage? Come on!
"Phil is attacked repeatedly"? Come on, we're way past that and tired of dirty campaign fighting. Seems to me Phil was last "attacked", as you put it, several month ago. That doesn't sound like "repeatedly" to me. Perhaps you want to start it up again? Sorry, we're not biting.

I don't know if you were at the EBNA presentation that Phil made. If not, check out his video of that meeting. But I recall him saying that he and his partner originally wanted to put a fine wine shop in Andersonville, made a presentation to the block club but the block club up there threatened to fight it. Thats in the 48th ward (south side of Clark).
Thats on the video. So, Phil tried, but due to a few zealots, he wasn't successful.

Look at Phil's video on debating Osterman: He confronted him twice to debate and Osterman refuses.
I don't think Osterman can stand up to Phil, pure and simple. Its Osterman you should be asking the questions of.
Please be kind to Osterman. He provided some plum jobs to the Ward insiders for years. Phil never gave anyone a govt.job ever. Harry gave his family great jobs and Phil did nothing. It is all about jobs. Where does Osterman go to church and pray,that all we need to know. Ho is a god fearing christen.
If we're going to use participation on a web site as the litmus test for courage, please tell us why Phil Bernstein's doesn't allow for any comments or feedback of any kind. Seems to me if you're going to claim Osterman is a coward for not debating Bernstein, you then open up Bernstein up to criticism of creating a web site in which he proves to be equally cowardly if not more so given his incendiary comments on it.

3) the videos are just 1 minute long, is this like speed dating?
4) he has owned a fine wine store for 20 years, so doing the math and by what he saids, its been 20 years since he work for the Army Core of Engineers. that would mean all the work "he has done for the community" was 20 years ago.
4) it was 20 years ago that some blockclub under Alderman Smith said no, MAS is never mentioned in any of PB's rants against the community.
5) MAS is THE FINAL DECISION MAKER when it comes to these community decisions, she likes to thrown it back on the blockclub, but its all Mary Ann, and by PB not reflecting the finger to the source, it shoots down his credibility, its sounds made up.
6) let the anger and blame go, its 20 years ago, clark street has really changed, if it was such a great idea, PB could of tried again, surely in the past 12 years, while the street was in a transisition. We still don't know both sides of this whole deal.
7) if I was running against HO, I'd get my ass out pounding the streets, screw the debate, get out to the people, except Berwyn, they seem to have gangs running after people, don't use the debate as a tool not to get in front of the community

Some of you people are in a state of major denial.
But one thing I notice very clearly is that NO ONE says anything positive about the "accomplishments" of Osterman in his 11 years in the statehouse.
In fact , no one says anything about Osterman and his fitness for the job.
Isn't that curious. Just beat up on Phil: no matter what he says or does. If he does "A" you will say he should do "B". If he does "B", you say he should do "A".
Phil's forehead is red, his tie is off skew, he has a pimple on his ass. He talks too fast. His videos are bad. He talks issues but too quickly. But Osterman is the example of greatness, even though no one has said one thing to support it.
People, how about using just a few of your brain cells and think about what you are doing.

NO I do not think Jeff's comment was an attack on PHIL. Nor do I think it was "smart ass". Is Phil that thin skinned? Can't have that if you want to be a politician.
Phil has even sent me emails that I would not expect to receive from a person in politics..nasty doesn't work with constituents. Very unprofessional. If Phil doesn't like you, you are blocked from sending him emails. That to me is NOT what an alderman should be doing and if he's doing that now, I can't imagine what he'll do to the people in this ward IF he doesn't like you, should he get elected. NOT ALL people like ALL politicians but as a politician, they must at least SHOW they like all people. It's part of the game called politics.
