Loyola Phoenix profiles Third Coast Comics

Loyola Phoenix writer Nathan Lurz recently profiled Third Coast Comics (6234 N Broadway) in an article published earlier this week. The article profiles owner Terry Gant and his story about how his love for comics, which by the way "aren't just for nerds," led him to opening his business that sits on the fringe of Loyola's campus. Check it out for yourself and read all about this local business by clicking this link: Loyola Phoenix: Proof that comics aren't just for nerds.

Prayers for the heart of Edgewater

Sunday, May 15, 2011. 2-3pm. Near Thorndale El. Join Edgewater neighbors of all backgrounds and ages in this rally for peace. We will bear witness to the tragedies of the violence in which we live, and to the power of community in seeking real solutions together. We will lift up our visions of a safer, healthier, and more just and unified neighborhood. We will meet near the Thorndale El stop, join together in lifting our concerns and hopes, and then march throughout the neighborhood together to bless sites of particular vulnerability. Volunteers from local faith communities are especially urged to consider becoming a team leader to assist with publicity, signage and the neighborhood walk which will follow the 2pm launch event. This event is sponsored by the Edgewater Community Religious Association, an interfaith association of religious leaders and volunteers who call their communities to work for a thriving and just neighborhood. "Around 9:45pm this evening we heard a gunshot and the blood curdling wail of an animal in great distress. Many of our neighbors heard it to and called 911. We live on Summerdale between Clark and Glenwood. Nobody was exactly sure where the location of the sound came from. Anybody have info on this?"

Fire at Park Edgewater

A small fire broke out in a unit at the Park Edgewater building (6101 N Sheridan) about an hour ago according to a few followers on our Facebook page. The fire occured on the stove in the kitchen of unit 3H, and the resident was unable to contain it. Fortunately, the Chicago Fire Department and other emergency personnel arrived quickly before it spread to other untis and the fire was extinguised quickly and no one was injured. Smoke was reported throughout the building.

Park Tower condo board sues resident over bedbugs

From Crain's Chicago:
(Crain's) — After bringing in an exterminator to eradicate a stubborn bedbug problem, the leaders of a North Side condo tower are pulling out another weapon: a lawsuit against a resident.

Park Tower Condominium Assn. Inc., which runs the condo building at 5415 N. Sheridan Road, is suing Sandra L. Gold, whose unit is infested with more than 500 bedbugs, the association says.

After almost being wiped out from the country after World War II, the tiny, blood-sucking critters have resurged in recent years, mainly because of an increase in international travel, experts say.

Moreover, Chicago ranks among the top five bedbug infested cities in the nation, according to an August report by pest control service Terminix.

While condominiums and apartment buildings have traditionally been commonplace for bedbugs, issues were reported last fall at the Chase Tower office building, 10 S. Dearborn St., and the headquarters of the Chicago Public Schools, 125 S. Clark St., according to published reports.

Ms. Gold has “failed and refused” to cooperate with efforts to exterminate the bugs, creating a broader pest problem throughout the building and obstructing the health and safety of other residents, the condo board alleges in a complaint filed last week in Cook County Circuit Court.

The association argues that Ms. Gold would not take the “necessary” steps to exterminate her bedbug problem: exposing all baseboards, stripping mattresses of box springs and linens, and emptying all closets, dressers and drawers.

Ms. Gold declined to comment, referring an inquiry to her lawyer, Ralph Schindler. Mr. Schindler said Ms. Gold has just returned home from a month in a nursing home while recovering from an injury.

Earth Day Poll: Recycling

As today is Earth Day, we're curious what Edgewater residents are doing to "be green." Vote in our most recent poll: Does your condo/apartment building currently have a recycling program? In addition, if you answered "No" tell us why not? If you answered yes, tell us about any other green initiatives you or your condo building have or tips you'd like to share with others!!

Earth Day recycling tips

From the Edgewater Beach Apartments Recycling/Green Committee:

Earth Day: 5 easy ways to recycle more in Edgewater

1) Compact Fluorescent Light bulbs: these energy saving bulbs are more efficient and longer lasting than the old Thomas Edison design, but should be recycled to keep mercury out of our landfill/environment. Thankfully Home Depot stores accept CFLs for recycling, as do many Ace Hardware stores and some Lowe’s Hardware stores. A number of independent hardware stores in the Chicago area also accept CFL for recycling, but you might want to call ahead.

2) Batteries: Last year Chicago stated a program to collect household batteries (if it fits in the palm of your hand, it is a household battery!). Today most Walgreens, alderman’s offices and the Chicago Public Library accept household batteries for recycling, as will some Staples stores. RadioShack even accepts power tool batteries and the large-style flashlight batteries (~size of two stacked fists).

3) Pharmaceuticals: got Viagra in your water? Don’t laugh, recent testing has found trace amounts of many pharmaceuticals in the water systems of 30 states. The EPA now recommends against flushing old pills down the drain. Instead collect your old/expired pills and take them (we empty them out of the pill bottle/remove any labeling) to the Belmont and Western police station where there is a labeled receptacle for pharmaceuticals between the entrance and the main desk. The pills are periodically collected by the Illinois EPA for appropriate disposal.

4) Packing peanuts: While a number of leading internet retailers are shifting away from using Styrofoam peanuts for shipping, if you are like me, you just can’t avoid them entirely. The good news is that the UPS Store on the corner of Bryn Mawr & Winthrup will accept/recycle packing foam peanuts. I don’t know how common this is, but it can’t hurt to ask your local shipper if they recycle these too.

5) Cell Phones: Over the past year the residents in my building have collectively recycled dozens of old cell phones through a mail-in recycling service with PaceButler. There are many cell-phones to benefit charities springing up on the web, but PaceButler has been great to work with. We’ve contributed the proceeds, over $75 to date, to Care-for-Real in Edgewater. Talk about a triple bottom line!

The Green Arch Food Mart closed by the City

We received several emails regarding the sudden closure of the Green Arch Food Mart, located at 5555 N. Broadway. There's a security gate over the front entrance, and a bright orange sign from the City of Chicago that reads "closed until further notice."

Does anyone know what happened?

Follow up on the smash and grab job at Sam's Chicken and Ribs

A reader emailed us the above photo, showing the damage to the front door of Sam's Chicken and Ribs. The robbery occurred late last week.

Middle Eastern Bakery & Grocery

A recent discovery of the Middle Eastern Bakery & Grocery (1512 W Foster) has made it an instant favorite of mine. This quant little independent store located on Foster between Clark and Ashland will fulfill all of your Middle Eastern grocery needs. While the store sells all types of goods from spices to nuts to beans and grains, the real score is the fresh homemade items. My personal favorites are the dips (hummus, babaganoush), the fresh baked breads and pita chips, and the meat pies. Ooooh the meat pies! Check them out on the web: http://www.middleeastbakeryandgrocery.com/ or better yet, in person!

Stabbing on Magnolia

From Timothy Fitz with the Chicago News Report: (Saturday) A man was stabbed several times during an attempted robbery on Chicago’s Far North Side. The incident occurred around 10:43 p.m. on the 6300 block of North Magnolia Avenue, near the intersection of Rosemont and Magnolia in the Edgewater community. A male victim is his early to mid-twenties, was stabbed several times - once in the stomach and once in the arm, said police. The offender was simply described as a Hispanic man. The injured man was taken to St. Francis Hospital in Evanston, Illinois. The victim is in stable condition. No further details are available.

Break in at Sam's Chicken & Ribs

A reader writes: "I just walked by Sam's Chicken & Ribs, which is on the north side of Granville just west of that street's intersection with Winthrop, and noticed an employee/owner sweeping up some glass. I next noticed that the door was completely shattered. The guy said that it happened overnight and that the register was stolen."

Kelly Cassidy appointed to state legislature

From the Chicago Sun Times: Lesbian activist Kelly Cassidy has been appointed state representative for the 14th District, which includes the Edgewater, Andersonville and Rogers Park neighborhoods. She replaces State Rep. Harry Osterman who was elected 48th Ward alderman in February. Cassidy, a longtime assistant in the Cook County state’s attorney’s office, was chosen Saturday from a field of 23 candidates. “For 20 years in Chicago, I’ve worked in not-for-profit and government,” Cassidy said on Sunday. “This is an opportunity to take it to the next level and an exciting challenge.” Committeewoman and former State Sen. Carol Ronen says the decision was not an easy one but that the vote for Cassidy was unanimous. “Kelly has a long record of advocacy with issues important to the people of the 14th District,” Ronen said. “Through the state’s attorney’s office, she has worked as a liaison in Springfield and understands how the legislature works and how to build coalitions.” Cassidy, the third openly gay member of the state House, reports to Springfield on May 16. She knows there will be some “tough budget votes right out of the gate.” “In our district, there’s a high level of social service organizations offering important services,” said Cassidy, 42. “They are threatened, and it’s my job to defend them.” Cassidy said she will run in the March 2012 election “I intend to serve the district as long as I can,” she said. Another lesbian who was being considered for the appointment, Paula Basta, director of the Levy Center, also has announced her candidacy.

5757 N Ridge

Multiple readers have asked us what is going on with the unique building on the northeast corner of Ridge & Glenwood (pictured above) which at one point was an auto body shop. The local block club informed us that the building was supposed to become a sculpture gallery, but as with many developments during these economic times there has not been much activity/progress as of late. We're curious if anyone knows anything further??

Mayor Daley's farewell tour stops in Edgewater

This past Saturday morning, I had the chance to stop by Bromann Park at Broadway and Balmoral for Neighborhood Appreciation Day. I arrived about 10:30, and the Mayor was fashionably (?) about 45 minutes late. I would estimate around 75-100 people were there in anticipation of hearing the Daley speak Daley appeared rather suddenly, being whisked out of the back seat of a black Ford Crown Victoria. In the above photo, he's greeting outgoing Alderman Mary Ann Smith. Shortly after, he took to a podium staged in the center of the park.

Daley began by thanking Carol Ronen, the 48th Ward Democratic Party Committeewoman. He went on to extoll Edgewater's diverse population, and stressed that Chicago is a city for families. He mentioned the time he spent in China, and what he had learned by observing Chinese school environments. He touched on the benefit of the lake's proximity to the city, and referred to it as a "sacred treasure." Next up was a brief discussion of TIFs, which can be a polarizing topic to say the least. Daley focused on the positive aspects of TIFs, reminding the crowd that the building of playgrounds are often funded by TIF, as are the renovations of police and fire stations. He described TIFs as the city's last econonic tool, and that we should take advantage of them. Next up he mentioned the Broadway Armory, and what a great asset it is for the neighborhood. Rickover Academy at Senn High School was also mentioned, and Daley touched on the initially controversial decision to bring it to Edgewater. Rickover is now nationally acclaimed, and Daley seemed proud of the Academy's accomplishments.

Daley closed by saying that he has absolutely no regrets, and has loved every minute of being Mayor. His closing remark was that it has been a great honor and privilege to serve the city.

Brackett & Co. moving to Lakeview

Brackett & Company, a small home accents store located at 5405 N Clark, closed its doors yesterday and plans to reopen in a "better location" at Diversey and Halsted according to Racked Chicago. The company also has a location in Douglas, MI and soon hopes to open up in Saugatuck, MI as well.

Abandoned police station to house Griffin Theatre Company

The City of Chicago has agreed to sell the abandoned police station at Foster and Damen to Griffin Theatre for one dollar according to this article from WBEZ95.1. Griffin previously called Andersonville home before being priced out of the neighborhood and has since set up shop in Lakeview. The move back to the Bowmanville neighborhood of Edgewater will bring the total number of local theaters to five.

Thuggin' on Thorndale

From the Chicago News Report:
"Police were called to a North Side Chicago business after customers were reportedly harassed by men engaged in alleged illegal activities. The incident occurred (yesterday) around 6 p.m. at 1100 West Thorndale Avenue, near Thorndale and Winthrop in the Edgewater neighborhood. The address belongs to a business called T’s Piasan’s Pizza and Grill. According to several 911 callers, a group of men, whose ages and races were not disclosed, were harassing citizens and selling drugs in front of the North Side business. As of 6:25 p.m., it’s unclear if any arrests were made, or if police made contact with the suspects."

Daley in Edgewater tomorrow

Mayor Daley will be at Bromann Playlot (5400 N Broadway) tomorrow morning at 10:30AM as part of his "Neighborhood Appreciation Tour." Joining him will be Alderman Smith, Alderman-elect Osterman and others. We hope that no one is injured trying to cross Broadway to get to the event at this dangerous intersection that badly needs a stop sign!

Soo's Cleaners closes - Berwyn station improvements coming?

Soo's Cleaners, located under the Berwyn Red Line station, has abruptly closed, but according to the note above, they will reopen shortly. We're not sure if the "construction" mentioned is related to their space or the entire station of the Chicago Transit Authority.

It could just be a coincidence, but the Chicago Tribune earlier this week reported that the CTA is revamping retail at "L" stations. When we read the article we figured the focus would be on the many empty retail spaces, but we could be wrong.
