Carnevil - children beware!
A few readers have commented on our Trick or Treat post that the Lakewood/Balmoral area is a great neighborhood for children to trick or treat. In addition, residents of the Glenwood Catalpa Condo Association were quick to invite area children to their condo building, which will be transformed into a haunted carnival titled: CARNEVIL. Check out their YouTube video from last year's Haunted Hospital to see how these guys go all out with their spooky spirit: Request graffiti removal online

Phil Bernstein speaks at EBNA
48th Ward Aldermanic candidate Phil Bernstein spoke at last night's EBNA block club meeting to both EBNA members and non-EBNA Edgewater residents alike about his campaign. Phil began the evening by outlining his qualifications for the role which include an education in economics (including an undergrad and graduate degree, along with PhD coursework in the field), experience with large public works projects and his experience as a small business owner. Phil also spoke about initiatives and issues he would address at the local and City Council level, if elected, including cutting costs/expenses, revamping the property assessment process, economic development within the ward, reducing crime and pushing for vouchers in the education system. In addition, Phil vowed to donate one-third of the Alderman salary back to local charities, open 2 ward offices with a new staff and seek input from the entire community on issues by posting information & proposals on the web.The meeting was well attended, thanks to both Phil Bernstein for accepting the invitation and EBNA President Killian Walsh for moderating and opening the meeting to the entire Edgewater/48th Ward community.

Trick or Treating in Edgewater???
Recently we posted about the trick or treating events at Loyola University (10/31) and the event organized by Cheetah Gym in Andersonville (10/30) with other businesses along Clark Street, but multiple readers have inquired if there is any traditional trick or treating in the neighborhood, or the city in general. From my personal experience, I have never had trick or treaters come to my condo in Edgewater, or anywhere that I have lived in Chicago for that matter but I have always lived in larger multi-unit buildings. Does anyone have any further insight???

Coming soon: Double Apple Market
A reader writes:"Do you know what's going on at the corner of Clark and Elmdale? The empty video store has a sign on it saying that something called the Double Apple Market is coming soon."
If anyone has any further info, let us know. Also, it may be a coincidence, but it appears there was recently a Double Apple Market in Lincoln Park according to YELP. This Double Apple was a Turkish market which also sold prepared foods such as panini. Not sure if they are related...
Rally to Restore Sanity
The purpose of the Rally to Restore Sanity is to "Take it down a notch for America" and help inspire the majority of Americans—"the 70-80 percenters"—who don't have extreme political views and who lack a voice in the media. While the main event is being held in the nation's capital, Chicago will join in, along with dozens of other satellite events across the United States, Europe, Asia, Australia, and New Zealand. Chicago's rally takes place concurrently with the main event (Saturday, October 30, from 11:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. CST) and will include a live broadcast from the DC event.

Poll results: Funny business
In our latest poll on the ECB, we asked readers "If the 48th Ward Alderman election were held today, who would you vote for?" The last time we checked, on Friday, the poll had just over 100 respondants with Harry Osterman holding a commanding lead with about 100 votes and about 10 votes for Phil Bernstein, while a handful of respondants voted Undecided. However, by the time the poll closed over the weekend the number of respondants had jumped dramatically, with over 200 responses for Phil Bernstein and over 600 votes for Harry Osterman. There were 14 "Undecided" votes. We know this poll, which is run by Google's Blogger, is unscientific but one can't help but wonder what type of funny business went on just before the poll closed.UPDATE: After checking our web traffic reports, this Saturday was the 3rd highest traffic day for Unique Visitors within the month of October. Saturdays are typically our slowest day of the week for web traffic. As opposed to one person voting repeatedly, it is likely that someone sent out a mass email or somehow attracted people to the poll to vote (completely a guess on our part).

CHICAGO SUN TIMES
October 22, 2010
BY FRAN SPIELMAN City Hall Reporter
Clout apparently still counts in City Hall jobs -- despite Mayor Daley's promise to implement a personnel system free of politics in the wake of a hiring scandal that cost taxpayers $12 million to compensate victims of the city's rigged hiring system.
The wife of a former Democratic ward boss -- who also happens to be the daughter-in-law of a former alderman -- has survived a departmental merger that will eliminate 13 jobs and force nine layoffs.
Maureen Volini was a $73,752 administrative services officer for the Mayor's Office of Special Events.
Now that Daley's final budget is merging Special Events with the Department of Cultural Affairs, Volini has avoided the ax with a transfer to the Department of Procurement Services.
Volini is the wife of former 48th Ward Committeeman Mike Volini, a $111,012-a-year assistant commissioner in the city's Transportation Department. She's the daughter-in-law of former Ald. Marion Volini (48th).
