Edgewater Historical Society LGBT Pride Exhibit

The Edgewater Historical Society opens its newest exhibit, "Edgewater Pride, Opression to Expression," next weekend with a free cocktail reception on Friday, June 3rd at 7PM.

The exhibit celebrates the LGBT community in Edgewater while chronicling the history of businesses, leaders, and organizations that have made contributions to establishing equality and making our neighborhood what it is today.

Chimney Cake Island featured on Hungry Hound

We first announced that Chimney Cake Island opened in Edgewater in January, but if you have yet to experience the bakery and are wondering what a chimney cake is check out this video by ABC7's Hungry Hound.

Another shooting on Ashland (or Broadway?)

This occurs less than ONE WEEK after last weekend's events where a shooting broke out on Ashland near Chase Park at Leland and ended up in a chase towards Clark Street.  In addition, multiple people on our Facebook page are reporting shots heard around the same time at Bryn Mawr & Sheridan, and 5800 N Broadway...

From the Chicago Tribune:
Man shot in drive-by on North Side

By Caroline Kyungae Smith
A male was shot multiple times in a drive-by in the Edgewater neighborhood early this morning.
At 2:50 a.m., a male suffered multiple gunshot wounds to his body from a drive-by in the 5600 block of North Ashland Avenue, according to a release from police News Affairs.

He was taken to Saint Francis Hospital in Evanston where he was listed in "stable" condition.

No other information was immediately available.

No one was in custody and Belmont Area detectives are investigating.

UPDATE:  The Chicago News Report states that these shootings occured on Broadway, and some of our Facebook followers report hearing shots on Broadway as well.  It is likely the Tribune is incorrect listing this incident on Ashland.

More info regarding Lickity Splits

Lickity Split (6056 N Broadway) joins the "progress has been made, but when will they open" group of businesses in Edgewater such as Nookie's, Burke's Public House, Lady Gregory and Burger Philosophy.  Lickity Split has a website up and they appear to be hiring their staff.  The plan is to hopefully open by the end of the month, and owner Ken Anderson plans to serve up made-daily frozen custard, sundaes, malts and Intellegencia coffee among baked goods from Celestial Kitchen and Phoebe's Cupcakes.

It looks like Andersonville's Big Jones restaurant is constructing a patio for the summer season. While there isn't much to see as of yet, once it's complete it should be a perfect space to enjoy their southern coastal cooking.

Arson in Andersonville alleys

According to the Lakewood Balmoral Residents Council (LBRC) block club and the Chicago News Report, there were multiple fires started early Tuesday morning in garbage cans in Andersonville.  The fires occured on the 5200 block of North Wayne around 3:30AM, and appeared to be arson.  Apparently the offenders were two young males wearing white t-shirts who were seen fleeing west on Farragut.  Someone later reported seeing them on top of a garage on the 5200 block of North Magnolia, but when police responded they were gone but a pile of burning leaves were found on top of the garage.

Coffee Chicago sold

Sources tell us that Coffee Chicago (Berwyn/Broadway) has been sold.  The current owner told employees a few weeks back, and the new owner(s) will officially take ownership at the end of this month.  They have plans to make some changes to the concept to include fresh food such as sandwiches and soups.

AlleyCat Comics

A recent addition to Andersonville, AlleyCat Comics is off to a great start. They're getting great reviews on Yelp, and the store itself is very unique. Located at 5304 N. Clark, follow the narrow gangway between Starbucks and Potbelly and you'll end up on a neat paver patio with the store just beyond.

ECC and EESP chime in on Edgewater library project

The Edgewater Community Council (ECC) along with the Edgewater Environment Sustainability Project (EESP) had writtten a letter to Chicago Library Commissioner Mary Dempsey that included their concerns of the lack of community involvement in the planning of the new Edgewater library branch.  The letter also offered suggested changes to the Commission's plan - including saving the historical building and reusing it (rather than knocking it down), and relocated the parking as to not include a traffic congesting curb-cut on Broadway.

You can read the full letter and proposed alternatives to the original "final" plan here:  http://www.edgewatercommunitycouncil.org/resources/Documents/ECC%20Library%20Letter.pdf

Upgrades to Thorndale viaduct

Thanks to a reader for submitting this photo showing how the viaduct under the Thorndale CTA Red Line stop received a spruce up recently.  You'll notice the concrete pillars were painted, and black iron fencing was added to prevent pedestrians from dangerously crossing the streets here.

Police on the scene at Berwyn/Winthrop

This is the scene right now at Berwyn/Winthrop.  Winthrop is blocked off by another vehicle at Balmoral, and there are at least four vehicles in total.  One officer had a younger man (late 20's, either white or Hispanic apprehended in handcuffs in the alley along the Red Line.  Other officers have the building that houses the laundromat, Kitchen Sink and Steep Theater surrounded, as if they are waiting for another suspect to come out of the building somewhere.

UPDATE:  According to multiple sources, this was related to the shootings earlier on Ashland.  The suspects fled and one car was pulled over near the garden center at 5700 N Clark while another attempted to ditch their vehicle on Winthrop, then ran south toward Berwyn where at least one was apprehended.

BREAKING: Shots fired at Ashland and Hollywood

Roughly an hour ago, our friend reported seeing what was described as a shootout at this location. Apparently a car's rear window was hit, and police are all over the scene.

Shots fired on Thorndale?

A reader writes:  I don't have any details, but there were clearly several gunshots fired last night near Thorndale and Kenmore around 3:30-4am. I didn't hear any secondary sounds: no glass breaking, cars driving, or voices. Just wondering if anyone has any details on this incident.

UPDATE:  Here is coverage confirming the shots from the Chicago News Report.

Police action in Andersonville last night

This was the scene just west of Clark on Balmoral last night as we arrived in Andersonville. There were several police cars with lights flashing and officers conversing. A few small groups of people had gathered, and we were told that an intoxicated patron of Marty's bar had been asked to leave. When he refused, the police were called to intervene. The man then proceeded to get into an altercation with them, reportedly striking or punching one of the officers. It appeared things were wrapping up by the time we showed up.

Wanted: Rehearsal space

I'm the Creative Director for Waltzing Mechanics, the theatre company behind "El Stories," which premiered this past February at City Lit Theatre. We are working on our next production and in our quest to plant roots in this wonderful community, we are looking for a local partner to help us by providing rehearsal space from mid-June through mid-July. I love the blog and I was hoping that a kind soul might be able to put me in touch with folks in the area that might be interested in working with us. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks for your time and I look forward to hearing back from you!

Edgewater Beer Gardens

If the weather would ever cooperate with us, it'll soon be time for one of Chicago's favorite pastimes - to enjoy sipping suds outside in one of the City's many beer gardens or sidewalk cafes.  Huffpost Chicago wrote up a nice little guide to beer gardens, and last week the guide featured the Edgewater neighborhood.  Check out the article here:  Chicago's Best Beer Gardens:  Edgewater Edition.  We notice they failed to mention a few of our fav's, including the Edgewater Lounge and Fireside, but we'll keep a lookout to see if they write an "Andersonville Edition" in the near future.   What's your favorite beer garden in Edgewater/Andersonville?

Forclosures in Edgewater/Andersonville

From Crain's Chicago Real Estate Daily:

U.S. Bank N.A. sued to collect two loans totaling about $3.3 million on three Chicago properties owned by members of the Benavides family, including a two-story building at 5705-07 N. Clark St., where popular Edgewater breakfast spot M. Henry is a tenant. Also in foreclosure is 5600 N. Ridge Ave., where the Benavides run taqueria restaurant El Norte; and 2227 N. Western Ave. in Logan Square. Minneapolis-based U.S. Bank inherited the loans from Park National Bank, which was shut down by regulators in 2009. The Benavides family did return a message requesting comment.

Former "Kitty Moon" building looking good

Before....

I took a ride up to Clark and Thome today, and the building on the northeast corner has been rehabbed very nicely. Kitty Moon bar used to occupy the first floor commercial space, which is currently for lease. The upper floors appear to have been revitalized as well, though it's not clear if they'll be residential units.

Pasticceria Natalina closing May 22nd

Italian pastry shop Pasticceria Natalina (5406 N Clark) is closing its doors for good May 22nd according to their website, much earlier than the September date we announced in December.  Not sure how much they will be missed if you remember the Chicago Tribune article and some of our reader's comments (Post:  Pastry with an attitude) about their experiences at the store (we personally have not experienced Pasticceria Natalina).  However if you are a fan, make sure to get your fix before they're gone for good!
