Obviously many of the buildings and single family homes in this photo have long since been replaced, though a good number of them are intact. Does anyone know what the large white building is on the west side of Kenmore, directly west of the Edgewater Beach Hotel? It looks to be a Temple or something similar. Note the interesting directive sign on the roof of the north wing of the hotel itself. I'm also curious what used exist at the current site of the Jewel Osco store at Broadway and Berwyn. It's hard to tell from this angle.

The site of the Jewel was the Lill Coal and Oil yard which had a rail spur off the el tracks and a gas station on the Boardway side. What the Capplecoal!
I'm fairly certain that the "temple" in the photo was the Seventh Church of Christ Scientist. (http://tinyurl.com/EdgewaterChurch)
Wow what a great pic! I've always wondered what stood on what are now parking lots or 4 plus one buildings. Looks like mainly very large single family homes, especially on Sheridan Road, which I knew about, but I'm surprised to see the NW corner of Kenmore and Berwyn was also 4 large homes as well as lots of them scattered around. Some look like they were much like the homes found in Northern Evanston. I'd also like to know what the big temple or church building is on the West side of Kenmore, a bit north of Berwyn where the courtyard townhouse building is now located that was built somewhere around 1990.
There was a similar sign on the top of a natural gas storage tower at about the same time, near Pratt and McCormick, which read "Curtiss Chicago Airport 8 Miles", which later became Glenview Naval Air Station.
Look at the roof of the northern X building where it says AIRPORT 15 MILES.
