Edgewater residents, community leaders and CPD come together

It was a packed house at the Broadway Armory this evening as easily over 100 concerned residents came out to hear from the Alderman's office and Chicago Police Department after Saturday evening's incidents. The crowd was standing room only just after 7, with people crowded in the back, along the walls, in the hallways and sitting on the foor. At least four news network crews were also in attendence.

Nick Roti, head of the CPD organized crime division recapped Saturday's disturbing events, while Alderman Smith, police Commander Moy and State Rep/Alderman-elect Harry Osterman discussed ways to improve the neighborhood and answer questions from neighbors. Roti, who has been on the force for 25 years, says the three suspects were some of the most violent individuals he has dealt with in his career. The Chicago Tribune is now confirming that the two surviving suspects, who today were charged with multiple crimes from Saturday, are also linked to three other drug-related mass murder killings from last year where people were duct taped and killed.

While some people were adament that they would not sleep until there were police officers on every street and corner in the Ward (extremely unlikely in Chicago's budget mess), there were productive discussions about how the community and the police can fight crime together. Most discussed by community leaders and the police was court advocacy. The CPD stated some impressive facts about how many raids, investigations and arrests are made but that once locked up what happens to the criminals is up to the justice system, who sometimes set free criminals after just 6 months. Court advocacy is one way to get longer sentances for convicted felons. Other topics discussed included having landlords screen tenants more thouroughly, and seeking out those who don't, positive loitering events, attending CAPS meetings, block club meetings, and walking dogs and not being afraid, taking back our streets. It should be noted that the building where everything began is not suspected as a "trouble building" and neighbors described it as one of the better kept buildings with numerous families living within it. The Alderman also mentioned her office's blog, ActionEdgewater, but we notice it has not been updated since early 2010. Multiple people thanked and applauded the Chicago Police Department (deservedly) for their heroic efforts on Saturday evening, and chief Roti said they would give Thorndale "a harder look" after many people complained about loitering and open air drug deals.

Another Tribune update here, as the story continues to unfold.

New neighborhood dining options abound in Edgewater

Edgewater/Andersonville already has a plethora of great dining establishments, but it looks like our number of options are about to increase.

Nookies has been rumored to be coming to the corner of Winthrop & Bryn Mawr for years, and it turns out it may have been worth the wait! According to this article on Eater Chicago, Nookies' Edgewater location will open this spring and offer much more than their other three locations. The restaurant will feature a full bar, a coffee bar, a fresh juice bar, a 60 seat outdoor patio and an expanded dinner menu including BBQ items.

Burke's Public House has been in the works since 2009 at the northeast corner of Broadway/Balmoral, and recently has made much progress with a bar being installed inside and recently the exterior has been spruced up with new windows and the awning in the picture. Also (if you click the photo) you'll notice the "now hiring" sign on the front door. No specific date yet that we know of, but if they're hiring staff as Nookie's just started doing, we have to assume they're coming soon!

Lady Gregory has also teased us with "coming soon" paper covering its windows since 2009, but according to the Andersonville Chamber of Commerce Facebook page Lady G's is now targeting an April 15th opening. Lady Gregory is owned by the same people of Wilde and Beckett's and will be located on the corner of Berwyn & Clark.

Kingfisher Seafood Restaurant & Bar (5721 N Clark) is now open, according to their website: http://www.kingfisheronclark.com/. The new restaurant in the former Arkadash Cafe space features fresh seafood which is brought in daily, and will be open for lunch and brunch in addition to dinner. Currently Kingfisher is BYOB until a liquor license is obtained.

And last, but not least, a new burger joint is coming to Andersonville: The Burger Philosophy will open soon at 1545 W Bryn Mawr. According to their website (http://www.theburgerphilosophy.com/) The Burger Philosphy will feature burgers with fresh daily-ground meat, hand cut french fries and malts & milkshakes. An odd name choice in our opinion, but if their burgers are as good and their fries are better than Five Guys', we'll quickly forgive them.

2 men arrested Saturday night charged

From the Chicago Tribune:
Charges were filed this morning against the two surviving members of a trio captured by police after two people were stabbed to death and a pursuing police officer was shot on the Far North Side over the weekend.

Augustin Toscano, 29, of the 2100 block of West Cullerton Avenue, and Raul Segura-Rodriguez, 36, of the 3000 block of South Keeler Avenue, were described by police as members of a violent "crew" linked to as many as dozen drug-related slayings across the Chicago area.

Toscano and Segura-Rodriguez were each charged with three counts of first-degree murder, three counts of attempted first-degree murder, one count of home invasion with a firearm and aggravated fleeing with bodily injury.

Toscano aslo was charged with aggravated battery to a peace officer.
During the chase a 12-year veteran police officer was shot in the leg near the intersection of Brradway and Thorndale Avenue.

Police believe Ibarra, Toscano, Segura-Rodriguez peddled drugs, robbed and killed some of their narcotics customers. They are suspected in several drug-related mass killings, including four men found shot to death in a West Lawn garage in September and three bound and gagged men found fatally beaten in a car in the McKinley Park neighborhood in April.

At times, the three would set up drug deals with buyer they knew, and when large amounts of money were involved they would rob and kill the buyers, a police source said.

"This is a crew of individuals we've been looking for some time," Nick Roti, chief of the police department's organized crime division, said Sunday.

From the office of Mary Ann Smith:

The police and our office will be available at 7:00 Monday Evening at the Broadway Armory to discuss with concerned residents what occurred.
Thank You

Three dead, officer shot

(photo by William DeShazer, Chicago Tribune)

Last night seemed more like an episode of Fox's fictional "Chicago Code" than a typical winter night in Edgewater - there were throats slit, police chases and gun battles on the street. The tragic evening began around 5:30PM when a gang investigations unit of the Chicago Police Department observed subjects running from a building on the 5800 block of North Winthrop. Police found three victims in the building with their throats slit and restrained with duct tape, two of which have died. Those fleeing the building jumped into a pickup truck and were chased by CPD and the suspects rammed a police car and shot at others. One officer was shot at the intersection of Thorndale and Broadway. Eventually, the pickup truck crashed at Devon and Greenview and police returned fire, fatally shooting one of the suspects. Two others were arrested at the scene. It has been reported that the officer shot, a 39 year old male and 12 year veteran of the force, is expected to be OK.

UPDATE: The Chicago Tribune is reporting that the suspects were a part of a "crew" that did business with a large drug cartel and may have been involved in 13 other drug-related murders around the city. The man shot by police, Arturo Ibarra, was the ringleader of the group. Also see this Sun Times article.

del Valle supports West Edgewater Park

Apparently the WEAR block club incorrectly stated that Gery Chico was the only mayoral candidate to respond to their questionnaire:
Mayoral Candidate Miguel del Valle Endorses West Edgewater Park
February 17, 2011 (CHICAGO)–City Clerk and mayoral candidate Miguel del Valle pledged his support for the West Edgewater Park project.

Ten years is long enough for an abandoned building to detract from a neighborhood, del Valle said. I believe the West Edgewater Area Residents know whats best for their neighborhood, and I, as mayor, will provide the support they need to carry out their plan.

The park would occupy the space once used by the Edgewater Medical Center. The center closed ten years ago, and the West Edgewater Area Residents have since advocated for an urban park in their neighborhood.

Edgewater Pride @ EHS

Edgewater PRIDE: Oppression to Expression, June 3-September 24
Chicago, IL — Edgewater Historical Society (EHS) will present Edgewater PRIDE: Oppression to Expression, an exhibit focusing on the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) movement within the Uptown, Edgewater, and Rogers Park communities, from June 3 until September 24.

"We're researching and seeking information about the LGBT movement to the far northside," said Will Rye, chairman of the Edgewater PRIDE committee. "We recognize a richness of LGBT history seeded within our community. This exhibit will honor those who have made great contributions in establishing equality and in making Edgewater what it is today."

EHS will accept any donations or loans from community members. Rye mentioned that EHS has a plethora of historical items, but believes much more exists that docents and committee members have not discovered.

Those wishing to donate or loan items to EHS should contact Will Rye at (773) 368-8110 or e-mail will_rye@yahoo.com. The committee would like items to be documented by April 30.

Attempted burglary/home invasion at 1319-21 W. Ardmore

A reader reported the following incident this week....

Hello, I'm the president of our Condo Assoc at 1319-21 W Ardmore, an on Monday 2/1t at 11:15 PM our garden apartment tenants were cooking in their kitchen when someone bashed in their front storm window, and then bashed again through the interior window. Living just above them, I responded to their screaming. Whoever perpetrated this attack was already gone. The police arrived within 5 minutes and took a report. They indicated a recent uptick in suspicious characters in the area. Earlier in the evening the tenants noted some young men looking into parked cars down the street. I wish they had called the police then....

Chico supports Edgewater park

According to the West Edgewater Area Residents block club, mayoral candidate Gery Chico is in support of bringing a park to the site of the former Edgewater Medical Center. WEAR sent out an 8 question questionnaire to the four primary candidates in the race, and so far only Chico has submitted a response.

As previously mentioned, there is a non-binding referendum on the ballot this election asking residents “Shall the City of Chicago develop a public park on the site of the Edgewater Medical Center, located in the 5700 block of North Ashland?”

Clarovista's nudist arrested....again

Steven Delatorre, a renter in the Clarovista building located at 1134 W Granville was arrested a second time for public indecency/lewd exposure charges just as he was leaving a Chicago courthouse where he had appeared to face a charge for the same offense. Delatorre was caught on security cameras running around in the nude in the building and first arrested on February 1st. In addition, Delatorre may have been terrorizing female residents of the building. His lease has been terminated.
UPDATE: 5 more charges were added against Delatorre today.

Howard & Honey need a home

As we reported last week, these two pups were found abandoned at Howard Beach and were rescued by a brave citizen after the dogs fell through the ice. We incorrectly reported on our Facebook page that they had been adopted. Howard had been fixed earlier in the week at Broadway Animal Hospital, and Bark Bark Club is working on getting Honey fixed as soon as possible. Despite their previous lack of care and their near death experience with Lake Michigan, they have no major medical issues. They have been fully vaccinated, and once they recover from their surgeries, they will be more than ready to go into a foster home or hopefully a foster-to-adopt home. If anyone is interested in fostering, now is the time to submit your application. You can visit http://www.onetail.org/ to fill out the application and email it directly to Anna at AnnaOTAT@gmail.com.

Bark Bark Club is graciously accepting donations through this link Click Here to Donate or by mail, as medical bills have exceeded donated funds.

$75 tickets for "abandoned" vehicles

If you've yet to dig out your car from the big snow last week you'll want to do so soon (or hope todays warm weather melts it). According to the Chicago Tribune, Chicago Police have been enforcing a law which issues a $75 fine for cars that have not moved or used in 7 consecutive days. Unfortunately, most of the people quoted in the article were Edgewater residents so we hope we're not too late getting out the word.

Osterman-supporting PAC won't disclose money source

According to the Chicago Sun Times article "Follow the money to 16 aldermanic candidates," the Polical Action Committee (PAC) For a Better Chicago has amassed a $1M political warchest but has chosen not to disclose the source(s) of the money - a possible violation of state law and campaign disclosure laws. For a Better Chicago recently sent out a mailing to voters in the 48th Ward on behalf of Osterman.

We're no expects on campaign disclosure laws, but we do know that PACs must disclose their financial activities such as where they donate. Does that also include where they receive their money from?

Big Shoulders bloggers visit Edgewater

One of the best things about the City of Chicago to local bloggers Laura & Michael is the abundance of unique neighborhoods. They love to explore the various 'hoods, and have decided to create a blog entitled "Big Shoulders Atlas: A Chicago Neighborhoods Blog" to share their experiences. They recently visited Edgewater, and we encourage you to check it out! Not only do they do a great job of giving a general overview of Edgewater, but they patronized and reviewed various businesses including Moody's Pub, The Little India, Redtwist Theatre and others.

In addition, in late 2010 Laura and Michael visited Andersonville, and you can read all about their experience here. We've added their blog to our "links" section on the right, so be sure to check back often.

Edgewater condos selling for cheap

Condos have been selling for extremely low prices in 2011, with sixteen of the 26 sold since the New Year closing for below $100K according to the Homeward Bound Chicago blog. A one-bedroom on Sheridan closed for just $35K, a two-bedroom on Ridge for $99K and the highest priced sale was a 2,000 square foot three bedroom which sold for $385K. Great time to be a first time home buyer, but if you're like us and have bought in the last few years these numbers are a bit unsettling.

Chicago Tribune endorses Osterman

The Chicago Tribune has endorsed Harry Osterman in the race for Alderman of the 48th Ward. The Chicago Tribune had this to say about Harry: “State Rep. Harry Osterman knows how to build coalitions to advance his thoughtful agenda, be it immigrant rights, affordable housing or crime prevention. The son of the late Ald. Kathy Osterman has lifelong ties to the Edgewater community. He has shown some political independence, voting against the state income tax increase.”

Man loses fight against death penalty

Peter Mah, the owner of Andersonville's Jin Ju restaurant, appears to have lost his plea against the death penalty for the man who murdered his father. Mah and his family submitted an affidavit outlining their opposition to the death penalty for Johnnie Baston, who was convicted of murdering Peter Mah's father over ten years ago. The Mah family preferred that Baston serve life in prison without parole, stating that an execution is "never going to repair anything that's already been done." The parole board, however, ruled that Mr. Baston's lack of accepting responsibility, criminal history and the severity of the execution-style killling of Mr. Chong Mah outweigh their personal opinions regarding the death penalty.

ACLU: Chicago Police cameras invade privacy

The Illinois chapter of the ACLU has released a report stating that the Chicago Police Department's blue light cameras are "a pervasive and unregulated threat to our privacy." In the report, the ACLU calls for a moratorium on the placement of any new cameras.

The CPD disagrees, however, releasing a statement claiming that the cameras have helped solve over 4,500 crimes and deterred countless others. In addition, the Office of Emergency Management and Communications states "the cameras supplement the work of police personnel in the field, and save local taxpayers money by freeing up police resources to protect other areas not covered by surveillance cameras.”

What do you think - are the cameras a necessary tool to assist the CPD protect our streets, or a violation of privacy? Let us know by voting in our latest poll and submitting your comments.

Seventh Church of Christ, Scientist

Last month we posted an arial view of Edgewater Beach where we denoted one remarkable building directly west of the Edgewater Beach Hotel to be a "temple or something similar." In the comments, one comment correctly pointed out that this building was that of the Seventh Church of Christ, Scientist. Another reader has done some research and followed up with the attached photo featuring the church which formerly sat on the northwest corner of Kenmore and Berwyn. Thanks all for solving the mystery!

Difficult terrain - who's responsible?

A reader inquires:
I've lived in Chicago for several years and take the Clark Bus (22) and the Damen Bus (50) often. Every winter I trudge through the snow on the sidewalk along Clark Street (across the street from Gethemane Nursery) to get to the Edgewater Bus Stop. It is NEVER shoveled and with the recent Blizzard it is nearly impossible to navigate. Obviously someone owns this property. It is well kept in the summer. The lawn is always mowed. The statue and fountain are maintained. Andersonville has installed a very nice Welcome to Andersonville sign on the parklike grounds... so, WHO is responsible for shoveling these walks and why don't they clear a path for pedestrians?

Proposed Edgewater Medical Center site development in Chicago Sun Times

The Chicago Sun Times ran an article yesterday discussing the proposed development by Waveland Partners LLC for the former Edgewater Medical Center. According to the article, city planners and zoners believe the proposal is too dense, and Alderman O'Conner is "tending to side" with their opinion. The proposal includes in a nine-story condo building with retail, single family homes, parking garages and a park. However, many residents are holding out for the entire site to become a park, arguing that their neighborhood is lacking open space compared to other areas of the city.

Bus stop removal at Ardmore/Broadway?

(Bus Stop before - photo from Google Street View)

(current photo of bus stop)

A reader inquires:
I usually wait for the 36 Broadway bus (northbound) at the Ardmore stop after visiting the gym. I discovered last night that the vestibule had been completely removed. It seems that this happened sometime after the storm, but before 8pm Thursday night. Did a car hit it? The trash can was also on its side. Looks like CTA might have taken it down (there are orange cones on all the sidewalk points) and there was no sign of debris, but all the snow was plowed right up to where it used to be.
Does anyone know what happened to the bus stop on Broadway at Ardmore?
