After 13 years in Andersonville, La Donna moving to Rogers Park

Crain's Chicago reports that the owner of upscale Italian eatery La Donna, Antonella Barbanente, is selling her restaurant and moving about 2 miles north to Rogers Park. La Donna will be missed as it is considered a pioneer for playing an integral role in transforming Andersonville's popular Clark and Foster intersection into the increasingly affluent shopping strip that it is today. The owner says the area has gotten too congested with other businesses, but don't feel sorry for her as she is likely to reap the rewards and cash in on the dramatic rise in real estate prices in the area. The transaction is expected to close next month, but there is no word on future plans for the space.

10/2/08 UPDATE:

David Tamarkin of Time Out Chicago is also reporting that Hopleaf is in negotiations to take over and expand into the space currently occupied by La Donna. Also, La Donna's new location will be 6340 N Clark, and they expect to be open in mid-November.

Trash to Treasure

With October 1st being one of the biggest moving days in Edgewater and Rogers Park, our neighbors in the 49th Ward are holding a Trash to Treasure Swap. Sponsored by Alderman Joe Moore, the 49th Ward Green Corps and the City of Chicago Department of Environment, the event will take place the weekend of October 4th and 5th at 2017 W. Howard (site of the former Dearborn Wholesale Grocery and Hi Neighbor Grocery).

Here's how it works:
On Saturday, October 4th, from 12 Noon to 4:00 p.m., drop off your old "trash"--things that are still usable for others but no longer have a place in your home. Come back on Sunday, October 5th, to take home a "treasure" or two.

Those who drop off items on Saturday get a ticket to the "Preview Pick-Up" for first dibs on others' unwanted stuff. The Preview Pick-Up will take place on Sunday, October 5th from 12 Noon to 2:00 p.m. After the Preview Pick-Up, the doors will open from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., and everyone is welcome to TAKE IT ALL AWAY!

Be part of the solution and keep reusable resources in our community and out of landfills!

Don't Touch Our Lakeshore!!!

A blogger with the Chicago Tribune recently wrote about Daley's support of a plan that would stretch the lakefront park from Hollywood Beach to Evanston. This was originally the plan of Daniel Burnham, who is credited with giving our city its beutiful lakefront park system. However, as you probably know, it was never completed and the lakefront park stops at Hollywood. The Burnham Plan Centennial Committee is looking into ways to build a continuous waterfront park stretching from Evanston to the Indiana border. While normally I would support such efforts to expand our park system - how will this effect Edgewater and our current residents who live in the highrises where they plan to extend the lakeshore? Also, what effect will filling in parts of the lake have on the environment? While Mr. Daley is upset that when biking the path "it just stops" at Hollywood, we hope that this is completely thought through and the Edgewater neighborhood has a say before any plans move forward.

Sweet Occasions Update

A reader sent this in: essentially it looks as if Sweet Occasions business was dissolved involuntarily by the State of Illinois. We're no lawyers, but this is defined as:

A corporation may be dissolved "involuntarily," that is, due to actions by persons other than corporation representatives. Such involuntary dissolution may occur through administrative dissolution by the Illinois Secretary of State or by a court acting on the application of the initiative of the Illinois Attorney General, creditors, or individual members or directors of a not for profit corporation.

Nearly 125 Shot Dead In Chicago Over Summer

An article today on CBS2's website highlights the uptick of gun violence in Chicago this summer. The article also references a map of the shootings, and tracks them by district. Unfortunately, it seems like their count is understated. They report one shooting in Edgewater, while the ECB has reported 3 this summer (June 16th, July 10th, and August 8th). They also have only one shooting listed in Uptown, which is severely understated. That being said, check out the article - even with these understated numbers its a wonder why our elected officials and leaders are not doing more to address this problem:

Power Outages in Edgewater

Candles were burning throughout hot Edgewater apartments and condos tonight - the power was out for a few hours for about 1000 residences according to ComEd. We were affected by the outage but our neighboring building was not, so it seems as if the outages were pretty sporadic.

We're Baaaaack

We hope that everyone had a great Labor Day weekend and didn't miss us too much. We've been traveling the past two weeks and haven't had much time to dedicate to the Edgewater Crime Blotter but plan to continue posting and updating now that we're back. As always, feel free to email us any info, events, or stories that we may have missed.
