Shots fired on Winthrop near school
Shots Fired On Winthrop
While investigating a “shots fired” call on the 5800 block of North Winthrop Avenue around 4:45 p.m. March 17, police learned of an altercation between an unknown number of males at the Swift Elementary School playground near Winthrop and Thorndale. Witnesses told police they saw two men chasing two other men on Winthrop. One of them produced a handgun and fired several rounds and then fled. Police found a live round on the same block.
Car fire in alley
A reader sent us the above photo - this is what he found in the alley one night (March 19th) when coming home from work to his residence at Granville & Clark. Luckily the Chicago Fire Department was just a block away and quick to the scene. Police are still unsure what happened - if anyone has any information please contact the Chicago Police.

Housed in a corner space by the Granville Red Line stop, Bananas Foster Cafe seems to fill a much-needed niche in Edgewater, drawing droves that are routinely lined out the door. And I can certainly see why it's a popular neighborhood spot for brunch: though the place was packed, service was smooth, and our food—eggs Benedict with Irish back bacon and standout ham and eggs with potatoes and baked beans—was well prepared and came out promptly. I wouldn't exactly call this fine dining—it's a former coffee shop with a garish yellow awning. But so much the better these days. Lunch and dinner menus are eclectic. —Kate Schmidt

This charming cafe from partners Michael Moorman and Jorge Aviles offers an eclectic selection of breakfast, brunch, and lunch dishes featuring natural ingredients and house-baked breads. A dish called Vegan Epiphany is organic tofu scrambled with red and green peppers, onions, and yuba (a baconlike soy product), while Dulce Banana Rumba is thick-cut brioche French toast with warm bananas, rum, golden raisins, and pecans. Pancakes come with either maple syrup or layered with blackberry compote and vanilla mascarpone and topped with a brown-sugar-and-oat crust. Prices are reasonable, and the staff is friendly and eager to accommodate. —Laura Levy Shatkin

St. Gregory the Great High School to take new, high tech approach to teaching
From the Chicago Tribune:Faced with an enrollment of just 140 students, massive deficits and possible closure, officials of St. Gregory the Great High School are getting a reprieve with a new technology-based teaching and learning initiative that will start in the fall.
The board of the Far North Side school, which has a diverse enrollment that is largely low income, voted last month to pin its hopes on a curriculum based on a national model that emphasizes analytical thinking, problem solving and communication, among other things. Behind the model is the non-profit Partnership for 21st Century Skills, which has programs in place in several states.
St. Gregory hopes that teaching children how to solve real-world problems using technology and by working collaboratively will appeal to new students and bring in more funding. Because of the initiative, teachers must reapply for their jobs, and staff cuts are expected.

10 year olds armed with phone books
From EveryBlock Chicago:Location: Sheridan & Thorndale
"While walking home Monday I was suddenly hit extremely hard on the back of my lower leg. I turned and saw two young (10-12 year old?) African American girls running away and two still packaged phone books they'd hurled at me. I'd just noticed them across the street walking south less than a minute before and had noted they'd looked like nice young girls so I was completely shocked at the assault, and that they'd gone out of their way to do it. Although this was probably the kind of mischief that children engage in and later regret, do be extra aware and hopefully, this is not a trend..."

Activity at Edgewater Medical Center
(photo courtesy of Flickr user Comtesse DeSpair)"Does anyone have any idea what is going on at the Edgewater Medical Center on Ashland? There have been some trucks going in and out of an entrance on Edgewater Ave in between the main building and the parking lot for the last couple of weeks now, and I'm interested to know what is going on as I live in that neighborhood."
Does anyone have any insight as to what this activity is?

LEN: Curtains Up For Restored Senn Campus Auditorium

By Lorraine Swanson, Lake Effect News
Students, faculty, alumni, parents, VIPs, local elected officials and community members gathered last Friday evening for the unveiling of the newly restored Senn Campus Auditorium, and by all accounts, opening night was a smash.
Like an aging screen siren, the auditorium at Nicholas Senn High School at 5900 N. Glenwood Ave. had seen better days. The wooden seats were cracked. The sight lines were lousy. A boom box and bed sheet had to do for a sound system and movie screen, a sad decline for a once proud performance space that was the rave of the North Side when the school opened its doors in Edgewater in 1911.
From the Edgewater Historical Society
The President of the Chicago History Museum, Gary Johnson, will be our speaker. His topic will be the love affair between Abraham Lincoln and Chicago. Mr. Johnson shows his love of both as he speaks. The event is free, but donations are gratefully accepted. The museum is open every Saturday from noon-4pm and upon request.

Chicago Tribune covers Rocco Lopez murder
Chicago Tribune
By Georgia Garvey
Authorities dropped their investigation into the slaying of a man in the Edgewater Beach neighborhood, calling it self-defense, but an activist who has dug deeply into the case wants it reopened.
Killian Walsh, president of the Edgewater Beach Neighbors Association, remembers the balmy September evening last year when Rocco Lopez was stabbed in the neck. She recalls the sirens and the memorials left where the young father of three fell on West Berwyn Avenue.
Haunted by the details and the way the investigation seemed to fade, she and her neighbors pored over police files, talked to witnesses and pursued leads.
What they discovered, they say, has convinced them that the man who killed Lopez and stabbed Lopez's friend, Mario Flores, 19, should not be walking their streets. They said they plan to launch an online petition to draw attention to what happened and have asked prosecutors to reconsider the decision not to pursue charges.
