We found this article interesting, if not ironic considering today is Edgewater's CTA Red Line scoping meeting and Emanuel was kicked off the ballot yesterday. According to the Chicago Tribune's "Getting Around," mayoral candidate and race front-runner Rahm Emanual has pledged to make rebuilding crumbling parts of the CTA at top priority. He's vowed an amitious goal of begining three upgrades to the Red Line in his first year of office, if elected: overhauling 10 miles of track on the South Side, extending the Red Line from 95th to 103rd Street, and renovating the track and stations north of Belmont. Together, the projects could cost as much as $6 billion, which Emanual plans to rely on federal funding for. What do you think - realistic goals, too ambitious, or empty promises?

Emanuel vows to fix Red Line immediately, if elected

No one can argue that the CTA is a mess, always broke; despite being insanely crowded during the rush hours. Not to mention dirty and old. With that being said, I wish they would dress the real issues that I hear people caring about, crime and jobs.
Well, now he's back on the ballot, so.....
It's needed, it's a key to growth for our future, and somehow, it has to be paid for.
It also is why having an insider to pull strings and $$ together isn't always a bad thing.
Go Rahm!
State Rep Osterman and Senator Steans have been building support on this for several years. Can Emanual benefit funding opportunities?
The crime in and around the "L" platforms/stations is becoming a major issue with many many people losing their IPhones and any other high tech items. It's like a "snatch & run". The crime and the repair of the CTA trains and stops/stations/platforms need to be a priority. Rahm has the ability and connections to get the money we need to get it done. The other issue should be the "rehabbing" of the people running the CTA.
GO HARRY
GO RAHM
Eric - this city doesn't work without the CTA. It IS something people care about - especially when it's not there.
As for capital expenditures - the more money spent on those, the lower the operating costs as things are in good repair, meaning longer spans of time between rate hikes.
Very seductive idea - but not enough for me to support Rahm. I'm fed up with tyrants running City Hall, and I fear Rahm will make Daley look like Harold Washington if elected. I already know of friends who work for the city that are hearing rumblings of retribution if they don't support him - and Rahm has a history of not only making enemies, but gleefully bending over backwards to screw those enemies. He's Daley without the charm.
I'm working for Miguel Del Valle - and while I frankly expect Rahm back on the ballot and, thanks to this court battle, winning in February (only the city of Chicago can make a thug like Rahm sympathetic!), Del Valle represents everything I want in a Mayor - and the ability to work together from the ground up, not work from the top down with an iron fist and school of dead fish like Rahm ...
towanda, I don't think you've been paying attention -- the well of easy cash is running dry, and the rightful owners of what's left aren't so willing to hand it over to Rahm, all so you can have improvements you feel entitled to, but can't afford to pay for yourself.
But go ahead and continue to vote based on who you think can steal you the most money. See how that ends up.
I'm intrigued that he said that by him stating in public that he wants federal funds that is his "heads up" to the feds to be ready (essentially, I can't remember the exact quote)
A. Talk about full of yourself.
B. It takes YEARS to get fed funding for these projects. He makes it sounds like it would happen tomorrow.
C. Sounds like more empty promises and talking points from him.
I just wish people would look into his eyes and see there is very little soul. Are his supporters even looking at how he stands on different issues and how he would FUND these?
I just hope with the recent will he/won't he make the ballot debate that folks are at least taking a second to look at other candidates.
I too am a del Valle supporter because he's worked at nonprofits, represented his district and done true reform on the city level and opened up government. He knows the average person's struggles and has LIVED here almost his entire life (moved here at age 4). He's struggled with all of us and comes from a very humble background.
I'm surprised that this bit of information hasn't shown up on the 'blog. CTA is rolling out 6 proposed plans for renovating the north branch of the Red Line. Three of those plans including closing the Thorndale, Lawrence, and Jarvis stations entirely. I believe they would probably add an south entrance to the Granville stop at Glenlake. I know that many of us live around the Thorndale stop. I wonder what others think of this possibility. Would it make things better or worse at Thorndale if they moved the station?
Kristine; I Like Del Valle a lot. I met him, Chico and Rahm. I think your comments about him are right on and I have taken a look at the other candidates., I'm just not sure he can win at this point and I do not want Braun to get in so, I'm concerned about wasting a vote. We all remember the three way that split the votes in 1983. I remember it well, I was a supporter and friend to Jane Bryne. I believe Del Valle is for the PEOPLE but I'm going with the front runner so the votes aren't split and BRUAN DOES NOT GET IN. Sorry if that's a cop out but it is what it is. I do think, though, that Rahm can make the city a better place. It's just my opinion.
