Chased by gang members?

On Wednesday evening, a woman called the police to report that she and her boyfriend were being chased by a group of gang members with guns on Berwyn Ave. near the Red Line stop. The couple was apparently pursued into the Fortuna Shoes store at 1111 W. Berwyn Ave. after the group yelled "gang slogans." Chicago News Report initially covered this incident earlier in the week.

Glad I moved. Oops, I don't mean to be "bitter" or unEdgewaterArtist/ActorWannabeCoolDiversifiedology or anything but it's truly a shame what has happened to some great waterfront property/parks.

"I live in a highrise because it's safe". I'll never forget that comment from an Edgewater resident. Ever.

I mean, I realize I wasn't "cool" enough to live there but where's the breaking point when ya'll say "enough is enough" while writing that rent or mortgage payment check? Seriously.

I saw the murder right outside this incident location about 2 years ago on an otherwise beautiful Fall afternoon. Are ya'll "progressive"? Have you progressed since then or is this news exciting? I'm thinking the latter.

Why do you care where anyone else chooses to live? Why do you think you have to justify your own decision by means of juvenile, anonymous rants in a blog comment section?

(begin sarcasm) It's time to fight back. Let's all buy guns mace and tazers and when a few of these gangbangers die maybe their brothas will learn to leave us alone. Oh wait. That's not very Christian of me....... I'll just turn the other cheek and continue to burry my head in the sand till someone stabs me in the neck and steals the $5 left in my wallet. ;). (end sarcasm)

About the story, it sounds so bizarre as to be kind of unbelievable. This happened at the L stop at 7 PM? (On what date?) Why would anyone brandish guns and start chasing strangers around at such a time and location? "Yelling gang slogans"? What does that even mean? Does entering a shoe store magically disable "gang members"? And how would they know the one guy was Ethiopian?

It'd be interesting to see some real reporting about whatever it was that happened.

Heard this one. The call is legit. There has been increased gang activity in the area. We need to help the police, and report every problem before we get back the gang problems in the area of the 80s.

Oh look...it's "No Different", back to troll yet another comment thread.

This would never happen in Detroit. Speaking of which, if it's so civilized and harmonious there, what are doing in Chicago?

Becky --

what do you mean, you "heard this one"? Did you hear the call? Where? Is there independent confirmation that the incident happened as described?

I know gang-related incidents can and do happen around here, but the details of this report seem fishy to me. Also, I wouldn't confuse whatever Chicago News Report is doing with actual journalism.

Love your writing John.

To base living in a neighborhood on such a narrow scale is like watching a reality show and believing its real.

If you're 20 or 30 and want to live in a neighborhood because of its coolness, you're generally the 1st to move. Coolness means a lot of social activity on the streets, bars (boys town, etc) and all the urban crap that comes with it.

I like when people say Im not blahblahblah or I dont mean to be blahblahblah BUT BUT
then that person goes on to be
BLAHBLAHBLAH.

On Lins Bin on WXRT they had a great little segment on the show about this very phenomenom with some very good quips and sound bites from movies.

Yeah Im talking about you
"no different". Either you with that name are super ironic or just really dumb.

Story seems rather fakish. An Ethiopean hanging with hispanic gang? Chasing a white couple into a shoe store? Scripted perhaps?

Dorothy, I just bought the most fab pair of rhinestone encrusted pumps after being chased in there by a couple of raging queens that might have been Algerians hanging with the French resistance movement. If that doesn't make the neighborhood cool, I don't know what will?

John: I have a Radio Scanner, that can pick up some police frequencies. I was listening when the call came in. It was a day that there was a lot of gang activity, that wasn't the only incident in that area as well.
