Soo's Cleaners, located under the Berwyn Red Line station, has abruptly closed, but according to the note above, they will reopen shortly. We're not sure if the "construction" mentioned is related to their space or the entire station of the Chicago Transit Authority.
It could just be a coincidence, but the
Chicago Tribune earlier this week reported that the CTA is revamping retail at "L" stations. When we read the article we figured the focus would be on the many empty retail spaces, but we could be wrong.

We saw them emptying out the space and dumping everything in the area next to the store. What a disgrace! How can we get this cleaned up? 311?
We noticed that as well, but that space is actually where their trash dumpster is located. It was all picked up as of Thursday.
From talking to the owner I gathered that they had to move because of CTA construction. I feel bad for them - it's tough on a small business to be out of their space for eight months. Hopefully people will continue to support the cleaners when they return in eight months.
I presume the station is staying open during this construction, as I haven't seen anything noted within the station and the CTA website isn't listing any closings.
great news on the stuff being picked up! I hadn't been by since then. thanks for the info!
I have called 311 about the immense pile of garbage dumped into the fenced-off space under the Berwyn el tracks, and I would recommend everyone just keep calling.
Call 311 and ask to be connected to 48th ward Streets and Sanitation. This space should have been cleaned out long ago.
It's all gone:) Went by there 04/09 and it was all cleaned up.
Hopefully the renovations will give the filthy looking place a facade that will make you even think of dropping off something that you'd want to be returned "clean". Sincerely. In 3years I never saw anyone even walking in or out of the place.
I'm sincere here. I hope Edgwater can be what it thinks it can be.
Do graphic T's and $170 ripped jeans really need to be dry-cleaned?
Sounds to me like they've been "booted".
They are a very nice cleaners. Home this doesn't kill another local family business
the convenience (soda/candy/cigarettes/etc) shop in the station itself is also closing effective 4/15 - according to a sign in its window because of the construction, but it also promises to be back after the construction.
Not that the Berywn station doesn't need serious work but a bit more public info would be nice. I asked a CTA staff person there this morning if he had a general idea of what all was being done, and how long it would take - and he responded "I have no idea"...
Can anyone point us to more specific info somewhere?
Thanks!
Maybe check with your block club or the block club for that area? They might know what the plan is for the Berywn station.
The CTA replied to my inquiry today (albeit with the wrong station name):
"CTA Construction is currently working with the Real Estate department to rehab the rental properties at Bryn Mawr. Demolition activities will be starting next week. Bus and rail service will not be effected by this project.
There is no stationhouse or platform level work planned as part of this project, so neither platform nor stationhouse access will be effected.
As far as sidewalk and street impacts, we are currently working with the contractor to stage debris removal so that there will be no impact to the current bus stop location.
We hope this information has been helpful.
