The Green Arch Food Mart closed by the City

We received several emails regarding the sudden closure of the Green Arch Food Mart, located at 5555 N. Broadway. There's a security gate over the front entrance, and a bright orange sign from the City of Chicago that reads "closed until further notice."

Does anyone know what happened?

I just looked up the address on the Dept. of Buildings Violations web database, and the location appears to have failed an inspection a few days ago (04/16/2011) - and when I say failed, I mean MASSIVELY failed.

Here is the address that goes directly to that inspection report:

that place smelled like spoiled meat

If anyone READS the citation, it seems that the problems are mostly structural, not 'rotten meat' ones. Does anyone know who owns the building?

That was probably the cleanest store with the most friendly staff that I ever encountered up that way. What they did behind the scenes to warrant this invasion by the city is questionable but as "Bob" points out, it obviously wasn't about filth or "rotten meat".

Never saw drug dealers or bums (which you refer to as "homeless" in Chicago) inside or outside this place.

Before you complain about your crime, Edgewater, you should be supporting a clean business like this. I have no vested interest. They were very clean and friendly.

P.S. (I don't want to sound negative....OMG), but if you were really concerned about crime in your "neighborhood", you'd open your eyes and shut down that junk store across the street from this place that "unlocks" stolen iphones for $15. Seriously, open your eyes!

Thanks Carivs. I followed your link and read the report carefully Not one single violation for the store or its operation. All for the landlord who got a farewell gift from the Alderman and her crew. I guess Dougie told the truth for the first time when he said "we are wrapping up loose ends."

They have been harrassing this landlord for several years because he has had the audacity not to sell his buildings on Bryn Mawr to well connected developers. That building was recently renovated. If these violations are so horrendous why weren't they caught in the post renovation inspection?

I will agree with you on that one No Different.

There is a phone store on clark across from captain nemos in Rogers Park that advertizes that it will unlock phones.

Is this not an open invitation to thugs? BRING YOUR STOLEN PHONE HERE! WE WILL GET IT WORKIG FOR YOU.

BTW, this store appears to be open again.
