Gemperle wins "Mayor of Andersonville" Mathiasson Award

Andersonville announces winner of Kurt Mathiasson award

Edgewater Historical Society founder Kathryn D. Gemperle honored for community service in Andersonville

The Andersonville Chamber of Commerce has selected Kathryn D. Gemperle, founder of the Edgewater Historical Society, as the recipient of its 2011 Kurt Mathiasson Award for Community Service in Andersonville.
The award will be presented to Ms. Gemperle at the opening ceremonies of the Andersonville Midsommarfest street festival on June 11 at 11:30 a.m., at the south stage, located at the corner of Clark Street and Foster Avenue.

Gemperle was the driving force that made the Edgewater Historical Society possible. As founder and president, she provided the key efforts in fundraising, management, and outreach to establish EHS, which opened its doors in 2002.

The Kurt Mathiasson Award for Community Service in Andersonville was established in 2000 to honor the man affectionately known as the “Mayor of Andersonville.” As the founder of the Swedish American Museum and owner of Svea restaurant, Mr. Mathiasson was the driving force behind the preservation and celebration of Andersonville’s Swedish culture. After his death in January, 2000, the Andersonville Chamber of Commerce established the award in his honor. Each year, the Chamber bestows the award on an individual or organization who most exemplifies Kurt’s devotion and commitment to the ongoing vitality of the Andersonville community.
