Residential real estate website Trulia has launched a new interactive display of crime throughout Chicago and other major cities across the nation. The interactive system, called Crime Maps, displays crimes on a block-by-block level with a "heat map" display where red zones are higher crime areas and green zones are lower crime areas.
Not too surprising, the area near the Thorndale Red Line stop shows up as the darkest red area in the Edgewater/Andersonville neighborhoods. One flaw of the system, however, is that it does not filter out results for violent vs. non-violent crimes. You can filter by crime type, but it does not adjust the colors on the map. Notice that the areas around the Magnificent Mile and Wrigleyville are also bright red - but we're sure its safe to assume these are due to less serious crimes such as theft. In addition, the map only seems to currently display a small sample size (May 6 - May 11).
