A reader sends us this photo, which was the scene last night around 1:30AM on Sheridan Road, just south of Foster (in front of Big Chicks/Tweet - technically Uptown). The reader informs us that one man was shot in the leg, and that police were still searching for the shooter.

oh, Mary Ann and Helen said closing Sommerset was going to solve all the problems in that neighborhood! I hope they started their search at those horrid Castleman apartments...
I think The Castleman apartments are in the 46th ward, where many many SRO's are located including the Wilson Mens Club, which is basically a "chicken coop" with chicken wire by the ceiling separating the rooms. The 48th is in between the 49th & 46th wards where there is a lot more crime. I just hope it doesn't spill into our ward. MAS did a pretty good job keeping our ward safe. She cleaned up Granville & Bryn Mawr and they are now pretty decent streets in our ward. We don't have the major crime issues they have in those wards.
I agree Towanda. The only serious issues in the 48th are in the vicinity of Thorndale. If that street got cleaned up, we'd be in pretty darn good shape compared to Uptown. I am also very worried that violence and shootings is going to find its way a few blocks North. I can tell you if I so much as hear anything that sounds like gunfire or see suspicious activity where I live, I'm calling 911. I'm very worried that the rumored reduction of police officers in our district will be an opportunity for gangs to also take over Edgewater.
This is part of the 48th ward. half of sheridan rd is the 48th ward and half is the 46th. mary ann and helen like to dump whatever moves out of Edgewater here. both alderman are full of broken promises to help clean it up! As a resident of the 48th ward that woke up to these gun shots, I'd love to see some real promises and real action to combat these problems. argyle is ward boundary, so nothing ever gets accomplished because the two alderman can't work together to save lives! so, don't hold your breathe on it improving anytime soon..... unless the boundary line is absorbed next year into one ward, this area is screwed. It's sooooo disappointing. As a resident, we have one alderman who will atleast listen to our complaints and make false promises, the other one doesn't even care. without both working together, all the residents can hope for over here is that Edgewater takes on some of these folks in order to equally dispurse them throughout the ward versus all the bad people sitting on top of one another.
Who?What?; It is weird how the boundary of the 48th is on Argyle, we have the north side of Argyle and the 46th has the south side. So weird. The 48th ward already has 30% of it's ward as low income housing so I'm not sure how much more we should have. Uptown, on the other hand, has more sec 8, SRO's, shelters and low income housing than any other ward, not sure why but I suspect that Helen had something to do with that. It's just what I've heard. On the other hand, while low income housing benefits those who are less fortunate, if the CHA and the owners of the drug infested SRO's are not monitored and held to a higher standard than they currently are, that drug infested crime infested element comes with it. MAS has shut down several buildings that were gang and drug infested, one of them even having a manager who was selling heroin. We as citizens of the ward need to report these buildings so they can be cleaned up. How do we do that? Through documentation like video of drug dealing or even just a camera photo. The alderman, who care about their wards, will move to clean up these types of buildings but they need proof. Don't get me wrong, I think we are in need of a new Alderman but MAS has done a fairly good job. We could be Uptown or Rogers Park right now.
Badresa; Helen had nothing to do with the closing of Sommerset because it's in the 48th ward. Also, the FBI was already investigating Sommerset because of the murdered patient from there, drug dealing and various other infractions that was going on by people who really didn't need to be in a nursing home. Those that did, are the ones who truly paid the price when it was shut down.
Yes, but I make a bet the majority of crimes committed by local residents around Sheridan and Argyle are not residents of the 48 th Ward. It seems the vast majority of the problem buildings are in the 46th Ward around Wilson/Sheridan, Wilson/Broadway. Why are the ward boundaries the way they are anyways? I do realize that a portion of Northern Lakeview is Helen's domain, but its not some jagged edged puzzle piece carved out like the 48th Ward portion of Uptown. Was this partly Helen's doing so that she could live in Andersonville and still live in the 46th? Margate Park goes to the 48th, a puzzle piece shape in the middle down to Argyle and look at that...to even it out the part of Andersonville in Uptown must go to the 46th!
I have quite an ironic story about being outside Big Chicks while our small group decided whether to call it a night or not (one year ago this month) but I'll save it for another time.
My concern is, do they ever complete the job up there? You've got bullets hitting ankles/legs of their "tartgets", hitting innocent pedestrians, piercing the doors of parked cars, shattering windows of homes, etc., etc., etc.
There are other cities that Chicagoans speak of with such disdain but I can tell you with regards to one of them, there's usually one shot, the job is complete, there is no need for uninvolved innocents to be concerned for their own safety and no property damage to uninvolved parties either.
I've also thought that phrase "an armed society is a polite society" was the most foolish thing I've ever heard but now I agree with it after living in Chicago.
You've got an abundance of obviously very inexperienced gun toters in this city that has a "gun ban". Thats the scariest part.
(and no I don't have a gun and have no intention of getting one either - I'll move first)
It is part of the ward that was carved up in an odd way to apease both alderman, speaking to residents there, they are frustrated because they are in between one of the more violent areas in Uptown, remember the video from august 2009, CNN did a show on it. I hope when the new alderman are in office they can work together with landlords of the community and secure it from crazy.
"nothing ever gets accomplished because the two alderman can't work together to save lives!"
I know this is a turn-of-phrase...but it is awfully accuarate, isn't it?
This past summer a bullet missed my front window by 10 feet, I was watching TV in my living room and thought my electrial outlet exploded, it was a bullet. I wasn't hit. I was robbed on the street 10/26, my bruises have healed. Both were teenagers with guns or out late at night looking for trouble.
1,000 alderman could not have saved me, but the parents of these kids could have.
