Police Warn Of More Catalytic Converter Thefts In The Area

Police have issued another community alert after thieves struck six different times in April targeting catalytic converters on area vehicles in the 20th District (Lincoln).

Both the Edgewater and Uptown areas were mentioned in the release which comes on the heels of another alert reported on March 19. The suspect(s) go underneath vehicles in order to cut and remove the catalytic converters. The thefts took place at:

  • 5600 block of North Kenmore Avenue – April 12 at 8 p.m. – April 14 at 2:30 p.m.
  • 5800 block of North Kenmore Avenue – April 12 at 9 p.m. – April 14 at 10 a.m.  in the 5
  • 900 block of West Carmen Avenue – April 12 at 8 a.m. – April 16 at 6 p.m.

  • 5000 block of North Marine Drive – April 14 around Noon
  • 1300 block of West Thorndale Avenue – April 23 at 11 p.m. – April 24 at 9 a.m.

Catalytic converters are used in vehicles to filter harmful exhaust system emissions by turning pollutants into harmless gasses. Thieves target them because they contain precious metals, like platinum, palladium or rhodium, that are valuable to metal dealers.

Police ask residents to report any suspicious cars or activity. They also recommend that owners place security systems on their vehicles. Anyone with information on the thefts should call Area North detectives at 312-744-8263.
