He will be serving the morning coffee to anywhere from 1 to 500 foreign journalists along with pastry from Hoosier Momma Pie Company in Ukranian Village. If you are watching a telecast of the Conference and see a paper cup from Metropolis Coffee, you are not imagining.

Tony Dreyfuss opened Metropolis Coffee 1039 W. Granville, where he brewed his coffee in the back room and served it in front. As the business expanded he moved the brewing operation to 5545 N. Clark where the floors were strong enough to hold the huge coffee bags. He, also, now has a kiosk in the O’Hare International Terminal.

For the conference, Tony has chosen an Ethiopian Yirgacheffe coffee. He will brew on site with the equipment brought in advance. He will arrive each morning on a shuttle from a designated location near the Loop.

Needless to say, Tony is excited. He will be talking to the world for 4 minutes about his coffee and Edgewater entrepreneurship. He has a serious supply of postcards for those journalists who want to order some Metropolis coffee from home. Returning international journalists can also shop at the kiosk.

Metropolis Coffee was selected by the Host Committee and their product is served at many popular local restaurants.

In addition, though we have no reason to believe the two incidents are related, the bomb squad was called to the SW side last night to investigate a suspicious package near a water pumping plant according to WGN. As more details surface we will update this story.

Did you know that Edgewater has a community choral ensemble that has been together for 25 years and performs two free concerts a year? Based on a mission that derives from the word ameteur, or lover, The Edgewater Singers sing together (and have stayed together) not only for their love of one another, but also their love of the Edgewater Community. Next week, The Singers will host two free performances of their spring concert, “Around the World in Song and Verse.”

Under the direction of Michael Oriatti, accompanied by Terry Stevenson, and with special guests Edgewater resident Steven Solomon and soloists Natalie Ingrisano and Grant Robertson, “Around the World in Song and Verse” will honor the diversity of the Edgewater community and feature melodies from varied ethnic traditions. In addition, The Singers will present the Midwest premiere of a trio of Lebanese love songs, and the American premiere of “As I Went Out One May Morning” by London composer Paul Ayres and their own KC Conway will provide an inspiring script and poetry. Additionally, the Singers perform music ranging from Elizabethan polyphony to American pop, from solemn sacred to Broadway patter.

The first of the two performances will be held on Friday, May 18th at 7:30 PM at the North Shore Baptist Church (5244 N Lakewood), while the second is Saturday, May 19, 2012, at 7:30 PM at Bethany Evangelical Lutheran Church (1244 W. Thorndale Ave).

In addition to the Spring Concert, The Singers host a concert focused on music of the many sacred and secular traditions of the holiday season. Be on the look out for their other show in the winter!

Pack the Car will host their 2nd annual fundraiser at Marty’s Martini Bar (1511 W Balmoral) this Sunday, May 13th. From 2-5PM Marty’s will generously donate all proceeds to Pack the Car’s beneficiary, Care for Real.

In addition, the folks behind Pack the Car have a new look with their retro logo. “We thought, since we’re a grass roots effort, we would go with a “60′s” feel, ” co-founder Gregg Rojewski said about the new logo. Rojewski tells us the new logo is just the begining. Stay tuned….but while waiting to hear what else they have in store, saddle up the bar at Marty’s for a martini or four this Sunday!

The Andersonville Development Corporation & eco-Andersonville have unveiled a preliminary design for the parklet that will soon be installed on Clark Street at Farragut.

The parklet was originally proposed as an idea to help not only promote sustainability, but to add green space which Andersonville lacks. As part of a greater eco-Andersonville initiative to improve pedestrian accessibility and bike infrastructure throughout Andersonville, the Andersonville Development Corporation (ADC) has partnered with the Chicago Department of Transporation (CDOT) and local business owners to build one of Chicago’s very first “Parklets”. Utilizing native plants, public seating and bike parking we will create a green urban retreat in one of the densest commercial districts outside of the loop. Many other major cities across the US are already embracing the parklet approach.

The organizations developed a “Kickstarter” website to ask for donations from the community, and quickly raised the $5,000 to make this idea a reality. Its not too late to contribute to the project – if you’d like to do so, click here.

Congratulations to Adrian Bolaji, Chudamuni Dahal, and Hari Pokhrel!

According to their website, The Chicago Scholars Foundation “provides Chicago’s young leaders with the support they need to achieve their dreams: mentorship, college admissions support, and access to summer internships and career programming.” The juniors were selected from a large pool of applicants for their academic success. To be selected for the program they went through a process that included multiple essays and a formal interview. St. Gregory High School is proud to have three members of its junior class chosen for this honor.
