Edgewater Whole Foods Underway, Opening Not Until 2015

Months ago the Edgewater community was buzzing about the new Whole Foods that is expected to open in 2015. In the last few weeks construction has begun inside the building located at 6009 N. Broadway. Workers have been starting bright and early each morning removing the old debris to prepare for the new business.

Whole Foods will open their first of seven shuttered Dominick’s stores which they purchased this year. The 255 E. Grand  Ave. store will open January 28, 2015 with Edgewater, DePaul, West Loop, Elmhurst, Evanston and Willowbrook expected to open after June, 2015. No exact dates have been released for the other six locations.

Cconstruction began a few weeks ago with a permit issued  to Novak Construction Co. Several large dumpsters have been sitting in the parking lot, which has been fenced in since the acquisition.  It has been reported that the cost of the renovations will be under $300,000 – although that figure has not been validated by Whole Foods personnel.

Whole Foods has yet to comment on why the development is taking so long, but many analysts feel that it is due to their vastly different store layout, which goes against the usual grid-style aisles. Another reason may be because of the large selection of specialty products that may take longer to acquire. We hope that by the time Whole Foods it arrives, it will be a beautiful building with plenty of whole and fresh foods to choose from.
