It was a chaotic scene at the Andersonville Walgreens at 5440 N. Clark St. when a shoplifter was confronted by two Chicago policemen around 8 p.m. on Saturday evening. The accused shoplifter scuffled with police, disarming one of them. He them aimed at the officers and fired shots.

No one was reported to be wounded by the gunfire, but both of the police responders were injured during the fight according to Police Deputy Chief Dana Alexander at the crime scene. They were both hospitalized, but the extent of the injuries are unknown.

Ms. Alexander also mentioned the shoplifter was a large man and it was a difficult process to overpower him.

According to some witnesses the store manager ran after the shoplifter as he exited the Walgreens into the parking lot area. The manager then flagged down the suspect who was carrying a bag. That is when the officers approached the man and the fighting began.

The suspect is in custody and there are no reports of any injuries to him. The gun that fired the shots was recovered by police.

Traffic along Clark Street is moving normally, however a portion of Walgreens parking lot is currently taped off as an investigation is underway.
