Alderman Osterman’s 48th Ward Office Gets In On the Pokemon Go Craze

pokemon-11As the Pokemon Go craze entices the entire nation to travel between the real world and the virtual world, it is making its mark in Edgewater as well.

Getting in on the whole mobile phenomenon, Alderman Harry Osterman’s office is planning a 48th Ward Pokemon Go Crawl for all to step outside and capture, battle, and train the game’s virtual creatures. The event, which is in line with the 48th Ward’s Safe Summer Nights programming, will take place Monday, July 25 from 6 p.m.-8 p.m throughout Edgewater.

Marko Zaric, Assistant to the Alderman and Public Safety Liaison wants to use the tremendous success of the Pokemon Go game to bring area residents together, saying “We realized that this would be a great event to build community and help neighbors to get to know each other.”

Zaric added, “Edgewater is one of the most socio-economically diverse neighborhoods in the country and the game has helped bring people together in a positive manner all over the country.  We wanted to tap into that sense of community and grow it further.”

Released in most places around the world this month, Pokemon Go is a free-to-play, location-based reality mobile game developed by Niantic for mobile devices. The game entices users to travel their real world surroundings looking for virtual world Pokemon creatures on their device by making use of its camera and GPS capabilities. As of July 20, the game was downloaded by more than 30 million people worldwide.

However, with all the excitement and popularity the game has been creating, there have been many reports of injuries due to people being unaware of basic street safety rules. Zaric said, “Although the game is fun, its easy to get distracted trying to catch them all.  We advise neighbors to be cautious walking around the neighborhood. Pay attention when crossing the street and pay attention to your surroundings.”
