Two More Andersonville Businesses Burglarized Last Weekend

In a recent uptick in burglaries at neighborhood businesses, two additional reports of crimes that occurred in Andersonville this past weekend have been reported.

According to a neighborhood business alert put out by the Andersonville Chamber of Commerce, the incidents took place around 5:30 a.m. on Sunday, Dec. 2. One of the crimes took place at Ranalli’s Andersonville at 1512 W. Berwyn where two individuals with backpacks tried to enter the restaurant through the alley. Not successful, they broke in through the front door to case the business causing property damage. The other business affected was just West of Clark on Balmoral, according to police scanners at 1511 W. Balmoral which is Marty’s Martini Bar. There was no other information about the burglaries.

The alert went on to say, “Given the grouping of recent burglaries and robberies, we are concerned and want to encourage all business owners and staff to be extremely cautious and vigilant. We also believe it is important to advocate for an increased police presence in Andersonville.”

The two latest incidents follow a string of recent thefts in Edgewater and Andersonville. Between Nov. 22-24 several popular Andersonville business were burglarized including First Slice Pie Cafe (5357 N. Ashland), Colectivo Coffee (5425 N. Clark) and Big Jones (5347 N. Clark). Also a man was recently apprehended after robbing three other area businesses between Nov. 25-26 at gun point including the 7-Eleven at 1055 W. Bryn Mawr, the Pizza Hut at 5320 N. Broadway and the Andersonville Walgreens at 5440 N. Clark.

After the Chamber reached out to both the 40th Ward Ald. O’Connor and 48th Ward Ald.Osterman about increased police patrol in the area, it was announced that 20th District Commander Loughran assigned an interim foot patrol officer to Andersonville until a permanent replacement is made.

The Chamber also mentioned the importance of security cameras both inside businesses and the alleyways behind them.  A Security Camera Rebate Program was announced by them back in August. If you have questions about installing cameras, or accessing the rebate, please contact David Oakes at 773-728-2995 or doakes@andersonville.org.  If you see something/someone suspicious or are a victim of a crime, call 911.

There will also be two upcoming BEAT meetings for Andersonville. Beat 2012 for 40th Ward businesses will be held at 7 p.m. on Dec. 12 at St Gregory Gym (1609 W.  Gregory). Beat 2013 for 48th Ward businesses will be held at 7 p.m. on Dec. 19 at Philadelphia Church (5437 N. Clark).
