New Italian Restaurant To Take Over Old Tapas Las Ramblas Space In Andersonville

bar-romaThe storefront at 5101 N. Clark, that used to house Tapas Las Ramblas, has sat vacant for some time now and many residents have been anxious about its future. It looks like the space will become a new Italian restaurant called Bar Roma that will feature Roman-inspired dishes with a focus on ‘global’ meatballs.

Bar Roma owner, Julia Zhu, is a retired commercial banker and was once a partner at Oysy Sushi. Zhu’s other half, restaurateur Howard Davis, helped her with the new project. The head chef will be Fred Ramos whose skills also graced Angelina Ristorante and Gioco. The wine selection was put together by sommelier Bob Bansberg.

Zhu told the Tribune that she always dreamed about having her own restaurant, describing it as “A place where I can have good food and drink with friends. Just a neighborhood place with good food and service and affordable prices.”

Expect an assortment of different types of meatballs that include, “veal-sweetbread meatballs, chicken meatballs topped with fried eggs, Shanghai-style meatballs and, of course, Swedish meatballs.” The food was inspired by a recent trip Zhu and Ramos took to New York City.
