Mariano’s at Foster and Sheridan Fails Inspection But Remains Open

Mariano’s has expanded throughout Chicago in quite a fast and furious manner. They have taken over several of the previous Dominick’s locations and many people in the community were happy to have new options for grocery stores. Distinguishing themselves as a step up from other grocery chains with more amenities, Mariano’s has things like a cafe, gelato station, hand made sushi and fresh-squeezed juices. With only a few months under their belt since opening and such high expectations, we were sad to find out that the Mariano’s located at 5201 N Sheridan failed a recent inspection.

MarianosThe inspection took place on August 12, 2014 and left the store with a risk 1 (high) rating. Critical violations include fresh meat and produce not being stored at the required proper temperatures in the deli section of the store and therefore being at risk of contamination. There was also a notation citing – “food (ice) not protected during storage. We observed interior of ice machine water reservoir with black slime substance dripping into water where ice is made and also into ice cubes.” In the comments it notes that inspectors instructed management on what needed to be addressed to fix the issues that were the cause of the failed inspection.

Mariano’s is still open. When we called the store to inquire about the recent inspection, one store manager told us “We are definitely still open and serving our customers. We had an issue in the deli section that was the reason for the failed inspection, but that has since been taken care of.”
