Even though so much progress has been made over the last decade in the LGBTQ community, organizers of the grassroots movement called the “Equality March for Unity & Pride” feel there is so much more to be done. The March, which takes place June 11 in Washington D.C., is hoping to bring unity to the diverse LGBTQ population

In order to join in solidarity with the march, organizers have planned a sister event at this year’s Midsommarfest. The Andersonville rally, which will also take place June 11, will begin at 11 a.m. at the intersection of Clark and Balmoral. Speakers and musical entertainment will be on hand for attendees.

“The Chicago Equality Rally shares the spirit of the National Equality March,” said Women and Children First bookstore’s Lynn Mooney in a release put out by the Andersonville Chamber of Commerce. “Andersonville is the perfect place for this celebration of the diverse LGBTQ+ communities, and we will use this rally to ‘give voice to our concerns and to support, uplift, and bring attention to those in our communities who are targeted due to immigration status, ethnicity, religion, skin color, gender, and disability.’

The March is hosted in partnership with the Andersonville Chamber of Commerce, Windy City Times, Andersonville merchants, and with the support of 40th Ward Alderman Patrick O’Connor and 48th Ward Alderman Harry Osterman.

It was also announced that $1 of every ticket sale at the Misommarfest gates on June 11 will go directly to three local LGBTQ organizations, Center on Halsted, Equality Illinois, and Ava’s Change4Youth.
