The original founders of the now closed LGBT sports bar Crew Bar and Grill (4804 N Broadway) have announced plans to open a new diverse sports tavern on Broadway in Edgewater.

Steve Milford and Brian Wells are planning to open the new venue at 6341 N. Broadway. They have officially signed a lease at the space which used to house Hamilton’s Bar & Grill but closed in 2012 after serving the neighborhood for almost 80 years.

According to Chicago Eater, the duo is currently raising funds to begin construction and are 50% of the way to their goal. In addition, Loyola University Chicago has signed on to help with capital improvements to the building.

The name of the business will be Cochran’s Tavern in homage to Edgewater’s founding father John Cochran. The report added that they will be working with architect Joel Berman to build out three distinct rooms within the space’s 5,700 square feet including a main bar room, a dining room which will serve “affordable American fare” and an event space.

The interior will include historic touches from Edgewater’s past such as an over-the-fireplace hung portrait of Cochran himself. The rear event space, which will be named after 1960s drag diva Miss Tilly, will feature live music and performances which may include a drag brunch with story time for kids.

Though Hamilton’s primarily served the Loyola student population, Milford and Wells said that they are not planning on becoming a college bar. The plan is to attract a more diverse clientele as a neighborhood style bar. they are hoping to open the business in 2020.
