Argyle Streetscape Construction Resumes Today, Will Be Completed This Summer

argyle-2The Argyle streetscape construction which started last summer, temporarily halted work on Nov. 20 due to Winter weather. Today work on phase 3 began.  The project has already completed its first two phases.

The first phase from July 6 – Oct. 6 focused on Broadway to Sheridan Road, north side of Argyle Street. Phase 2 from Oct. 6 – Nov. 20 focused on Broadway to Kenmore Avenue, south side of Argyle Street. The final two phases should be completed by mid-July, 2016.

According to Uptown United, Argyle Street between Broadway and Sheridan has been milled (2 inches) to prepare for paver installation. Phase 3 and 4 will focus on Kenmore Ave. to Sheridan Rd. and Argyle St.

Phase 3 which lasts through this April, will also include construction and installation of the pedestrian refuge island on Broadway and the vertical community identifier. Traffic will be one-way until construction is finished. Argyle will again be a two-way street once the project is complete.

When finished, the Argyle Shared Street Streetscape will will become the City of Chicago’s first street to be designed based on ‘shared street’ design guidelines. It will create a plaza-like feel by raising the street and eliminating curbs. The new streetscape design will include permeable unit pavers, infiltration planers, large pedestrian areas that allow for sidewalk cafes, planters, and community identifiers.

Argyle Ave. is located just outside of Edgewater but is located in the 48th Ward. All businesses will remain open during the construction.
