Andersonville Prepares For Major Water Main Replacement Project, What To Know

Andersonville is preparing for a large-scale water main replacement project that will commence on Clark Street from Foster to Bryn Mawr and some of the adjacent side streets. The work will replace the current water main which is well over a century old.

The first part of the construction on Clark Street, which is expected to start this Monday, will take between 8-10 weeks to complete. Permits for the work have been given to the contractor (NPL), who will be using two crews in order to finish the job quickly. One of the crews will start on Foster and work their way North, while the second crew will start on Bryn Mawr and work their way South. Each crew will focus on one block at a time. In addition, The Department of Forestry will begin trimming trees on Summerdale, Berwyn, Farragut, and Balmoral next week to prevent damage to area trees.

Once Clark is complete, the second part of the construction will move to the side streets which includes Farragut (between Clark & Glenwood), Berwyn (between Clark & Glenwood), Summerdale (between Ashland & Glenwood), and Balmoral (between Ashland & Lakewood).

On weekdays between 7 a.m. – 4 p.m. on blocks where the work is being done, there will be temporary parking restrictions in place. However, two-way traffic will stay open. At nighttime and on weekends, parking will open back up.

In order to avoid much of the frustration the water main project created South of Foster last year; Alderman Osterman, Alderman O’Connor, NPL, and the Andersonville Chamber of Commerce conducted two community meetings recently for both residents and business owners. There they gauged concerns and detailed the scope of the project.

In order to avoid confusion, it was announced that there will be weekly check-in meetings in order to provide regular updates as well as answer any project-specific questions. They will be held every Wednesday, beginning January 23 at 9 a.m. in the Andersonville Chamber of Commerce Conference Room at 5153 N. Clark, Suite 228.

The Andersonville Chamber of Commerce will be offering text alerts to help people in the community stay informed about the project. To sign up for the texts, click here. The Chamber will also continue to hold all regularly scheduled events including With Love From Andersonville (February 14-17), Andersonville Restaurant Week (February 22 — March 3) and the Andersonville “Insidewalk” Sale (March 8-10).
