Alderman Moore Witnesses Devon Shooting, One Man Dead

DevonShootingIt was a shocking scene on a busy Saturday at 3:20pm as people ran for cover when shots rang out at 1300 West Devon. Standing at a bus stop, William Lewis, 28,  of the 4700 block of North Hermitage was fatally shot in the back. The man was taken to Saint Francis hospital in Evanston where he was pronounced dead just before 4pm.

Police suspect gang activity but that has not been confirmed. There has also been reports the man was not the intended target. According to police, three persons of interest were being questioned and the gunman’s car may have been retrieved.

In all this chaos, the most unusual thing was that Alderman Joe Moore of Rogers Park witnessed the whole event. It appears as though Alderman Moore was outside on the street, just one block from where the incident occurred. In an ABC7 interview, Mr. Moore said, “This was a bustling commercial strip and it was the last thing I was expecting to see.” Even though he could not identify the shooter, he did sadly notice how young the gunman was. “All I was focused on was that this kid was carrying a large weapon. He looked quite young. In fact, probably younger than my 17-year-old son, which had an impact on me as well.”

Shocked by this event on the north border of Edgewater, people are still coping with last Thursday’s shooting near our South border at 4500 block of Marine. Alderman Harry Osterman of the 48th ward sent out a release on Sunday stating, “Throughout the weekend I have been in communication with both district commanders about this shooting and the shooting incident that occurred Thursday evening in Uptown. Additional gang crime teams have been dispatched to our community in the wake of these incidents.” The alderman says  he will provide further information on both of the events later in the week as they become available.
