Edgewater Workbench Grand Opening Tonight

Edgewater WorkbenchEdgewater Workbench, the new community workshop and digital fabrication center has opened on the north side of Chicago. Edgewater Workbench is celebrating its grand opening this Saturday, July 12, at 6 p.m., with a party featuring 3D printing and laser cutting demonstrations, laser-etched pizzas, and handmade goods by local artists.

The business is modeled after a growing trend in community arts spaces: the makerspace. Maker- and hackerspaces come in all shapes and sizes, and offer a nexus for creative types to share knowledge and skills, and work on projects. Edgewater Workbench’s amenities include: three 3D printers, a laser cutter, a computer lab, basic hand and power tools, and a host of art supplies. Laser cutting and 3D printing services are available for clients including inventors, business owners, and designers.

Edgewater Workbench was started by Edgewater couple Ally Brisbin and Stuart Marsh. The duo’s idea for a community 3D printing and fabrication center won a contest sponsored by ABSOLUT earlier this year. The grand prize of $20,000 was put toward purchasing equipment and supplies for the digital fabrication portion of Edgewater Workbench.

Edgewater Workbench features a retail boutique where local artisans sell handmade goods and art. In the evenings, Brisbin and Marsh open their space up as a classroom for community members to share their knowledge.

“We want to provide a place for people to make a living pursuing their passions,” Marsh said. “Our prices are accessible to working creatives and we offer other ways for them to use Edgewater Workbench as a source of income aside from just work space.”

Edgewater Workbench is located at 1130 W. Thorndale Ave., just west of the Thorndale Red Line station. Open shop hours are 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily. Visit edgewaterworkbench.com for more information.
