Alderman Issues Community Alert After Women Grabbed By Bicyclist

Alderman Patrick O’Connor put out a community alert yesterday evening warning women walking alone or with children to be aware after a man has been accused of grabbing female pedestrians from behind while riding his bike.

The incidents, which happened last Thursday just west of Andersonville in the Ravenswood and Lincoln Square neighborhoods, occurred within a 30-minute time span.

The first attack happened around 10:30 a.m. in the 4400 block of N. Ravenswood when the man grabbed a 41-year-old woman who was walking alone. The second attack happened 15 minutes later at 10:45 a.m. in the 4600 block of N. Campbell when a 31-year-old woman who was walking with her child in a stroller was grabbed from behind. The third attack happened at 10:57 a.m. in the 2300 block of W. Sunnyside when an 18-year-woman who was also walking with a child in a stroller was inappropriately touched.

Authorities said two of the women chased or confronted the suspect but according to the Alderman, it has been difficult to make an identification because he approached the victims from behind.

The suspect is identified as a male white or male white Hispanic, 25-40 years of age, possibly wearing a dark colored baseball cap wearing a black & gray striped style sweater with blue jeans, riding a silver colored BMX style bicycle.

“Female pedestrians are advised to be aware of their surroundings and to call 911 immediately if they encounter the offender or see someone acting suspiciously,” said Alderman O’Connor. “As always, residents are encouraged to attend their area Beat Meetings to stay apprised of activity taking place in the area.”

In the alert, police warn women to avoid talking to strangers or approaching strange vehicles, to walk in pairs and to avoid confronting an offender. Also, it is advised to call 911 to report any suspicious persons or activity in the area.
