As another Holiday season is here, people come together to celebrate with hopes of joy and peace. One event that embodies this spirit is the annual Saint Lucia Festival of Lights procession which takes place in Andersonville tomorrow, Dec. 13.

Celebrating Santa Lucia Day, one of the most reverent events for Scandinavians, girls aged 16-24 will lead a procession down Clark St. wearing white gowns and holding candles. According to a release put out by the Swedish American Museum, the lead person in the group wears a crown of candles on her head which symbolizes the fire that refused to take Lucia’s life after she was sentenced to death by Roman authorities in 310 A.D. for refusing to compromise her Christian principles.

All are welcome to join the procession which begins at the Swedish American Museum (5211 N. Clark) at 4:45 p.m. The group will sing the “Lucia Song” as they walk North on Clark to Balmoral and then head back South to Foster. Afterwards, everyone is then welcome to participate in a special Holiday service at Ebenezer Lutheran Church (1650 W. Foster).

Here is a list of all events for St. Lucia Day:

12 p.m. – A group of young women, aged 16 to 24, will assemble at the Chicago Cultural Center in white robes as a choir sings. Each candidate represents a Chicago-area Swedish-American organization, and one will be selected as the community’s 2018 Santa Lucia.

4:45 p.m. – The annual Lucia Day procession will begin at the Swedish American Museum at 5211 N. Clark. The robed participants will march from the Museum around the Andersonville area before returning.

7 p.m. – In nearby Ebenezer Lutheran Church, known as the “Swedish Cathedral” at 1650 W. Foster, a Santa Lucia service will be conducted. It will include holiday songs, readings and a final procession.
