Another shooting today in Edgewater Beach

The scene at Thorndale and Broadway this afternoon. Credit: Michael King

Around 1:20 p.m. (that’s broad daylight to you and me), two men were shot in the 1100 block of W. Thorndale Ave. While the area is a known hotspot for this sort of activity, the brazen nature of the act is alarming to say the least. The shooting was reportedly gang related, as is most often the case. One of the men was seriously wounded in the chest, while the other was shot in the foot.

Area police officers are conducting investigations, and reportedly reviewing

Does one think a re-painted and rehabbed L Stop is going to reduce the gang activity anywhere?

  • paul

thorndale is NOT a “known hotspot for this sort of activity”. the shootings in 2012 have been on winthrop. the reason is simple: there are many cameras on thorndale and most of the gang bangers know that. one of the officers on the scene today expressed confidence that this perp would be identified as he ran directly into 3 cameras. i had not noticed them but there they are above the doors to the station facing west towards broadway. when he ran beyond those cameras he was picked up by 2 other cameras on the east side of the tracks. lets hope this gunman is caught and fully prosecuted. meanwhile the victim is in critical condition and the innocent bystander was treated and released.

    • Thorndale and Winthrop intersect, Buddy! That corner is the shadiest spot in Edgewater, IMO.

    • Thorndale

Yes, Thorndale IS a known hotpost for loitering, open drug dealing and so forth. Open your eyes and look around. The cameras do absolutely nothing.

It’s calm in the morning. Senn people stand there. Can we keep them there all day?

@paul…did you just move into the neighborhood? this stuff has been going on for over 40 years!!!

Excellent. When can we expect a retaliation to this retaliation in my hood again? Before the end of this weekend? When do we get to start shooting the gang bangers in retaliation?

They should put that fat f*ck of a cop who sits in his squad car 24/7 giving tickets for incomplete stops at Berwyn/Western. That’s when Agustus isn’t visiting his mommy (and no doubt having his third and fourth lunch?) who happens to live on the block at Berwyn/Western, too.

      I hear you man.

I see thugs daily on Thorndale, so to say that it’s not a “known hotspot” sounds like something the Chamber of Commerce would put out. I’ve seen people have to walk out into the street to go around large groups of thugmo’s who block the sidewalk, daring anyone to walk thru them. I’ve been in Edgewater and Rogers Park (now Edgewater again on Kenmore) for over 25 years, so I think my appraisal is more than accurate.

Mayor Daley admitted that all the cameras in the city do not work because they ran out of funds. I don’t believe they work down there. Also cameras cannot see under the canopies.
