Man Shot, Killed Last Night 5200 Block Of Kenmore

kenmoreLast night an unidentified man was shot in the chest and killed on the 5200 block of Kenmore (approximately 5214). According to police the man in his 20s or 30s, was shot at 9:54p.m and the Cook County Medical Examiner stated that he was pronounced dead at Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center at 10:24p.m .

There has been no confirmation on whether this was gang related or not, only that the man was most likely the intended target. No arrests have been made.

There were many reports to Edgeville Buzz. Neighbors immediately expressed both sadness and frustration including Amber Crain, whose fiancee rushed to the scene to help stop the bleeding while ambulances came. She said in her Facebook post, “Tonight… while having friends over to visit, a man was shot one building south of mine. Jeff and I were witnesses. I called 911 while Jeff ran downtstairs to help the victim.” She added, “911 hung up on me after I explained my address and the situation. No one took down Jeff’s name or number. A true witness to the scene. Our personal towel on the sidewalk covered in blood remains.”

Another person, Vincent Stefanelli was leading a group of over twenty children from Winsconsin at nearby Epworth Church’s homeless shelter and found it difficult to reassure the kids about their safety. He said, “There were close to 25 police officers converging on Kenmore ranging from regular squad cars, to officers on bicycles. We were questioned but we didn’t hear or see anything of value, nor did my staff or clients who were equally surprised to see the large police presence.” Mr Stefanelli added, “The kids had already heard about how dangerous Chicago was prior to their arrival. This incident not only reinforced it, but shook them up pretty badly. Needless to say, any positive experience which they had in the shelter was quickly forgotten about.”

It is good to remember that our neighbors are also victims to these crimes. Many of us facing unspeakable tragedies such as this and left to pick up the pieces in homes and communities we love.

***UPDATE***

Alderman Harry Osterman has released a statement about the event saying,

“Last night, shortly before 10:00p.m., there was a gang-related homicide on the 5200 block of N. Kenmore. I have been in close contact with the 20th District Police Commander. According to the police, this individual was an intended target. The victim sustained one bullet wound to the chest and was later pronounced dead at Illinois Masonic. I will have more information regarding this incident later in the week and will convey it to the community.

He added, “The investigation is still ongoing and there have been no arrests made yet. Police have been interviewing witnesses in the area. If you have any information regarding this crime, I encourage you to contact Area North Detectives at 312-744-8200 or 48th Ward Public Safety Liaison Marko Zaric at Marko@48thward.org or 773-784-5277.

I have reached out to Police Superintendent McCarthy and plan to meet with him and Mayor Emanuel about the shootings that have occurred in our community. I will continue to request additional resources to aid the Police in addressing and quelling the senseless violence in our neighborhood and throughout the city.”

So at this point, shootings and murders have become the norm along the Winthrop/Kenmore corridor from Foster on up to Thorndale and beyond. Could it have something to do with the fact that both streets are more or less unchecked open air drug markets, with gangs fighting over the territory? We could ask the Alderman, but he’s probably busy with the latest stop sign placement dispute raging among the Lakewood/Balmoral set.

    • meghan

Excuse me- I live on Kenmore near this shooting and it is NOT an open air drug market. It is NOT unchecked. The police and aldermen are all over these two streets. This is NOT the norm. The neighbors on the block where this occurred are a tight knit group. They mostly own their condos. They attend meetings and report crimes. They own dogs, have kids who play on the sidewalks here, and are generally a fantastic group who are making this neighborhood better and better. Get your facts straight- was this shocking, unacceptable, and unnerving? Absolutely. But the police and Aldermen are VERY aware and active around here.

      • Turbo60640

I used to live there too, until I walked upon a knife fight in broad daylight. That was the last straw for me. Thing is, the area’s been a drug hotspot since at least the late 90s when Bryn Mawr was a veritable free for all. Why do you think these thugs continue shooting each other within the same few blocks on a semi-regular basis? The problem isn’t the local residents. It’s the shiftless “youths” and other undesirables that are allowed to permeate the area, loiter and deal drugs without any substantial repercussions. To attempt to curb that activity would be “profiling,” you know.

        • BumbleBee

True. And for the record…the drug dealing in Edgewater has been expanded beyond the Kenmore corridor. I just found the evidence on the street I live, which is west of Broadway.

          • Turbo60640

Not surprising. Take a walk along Kenmore or Winthrop near Berwyn during the early evening and you’ll see the dealing in plain sight. You’ve got underage kids on bikes playing courier/lookout, guys sitting in parked cars counting money, and dealers shuffling up and down the sidewalks doing their thing. The police roll by from time to time and the elements scatter, but as soon as the cops are gone they go right back to it.

          • Steve

Lived there and saw the same thing….

          • Claire Zulkey

That is weird. I live right there, where my husband and I walk our dog several times a day and take our son to daycare/the playground and that is not what we see.

          • Pete in Edgewater

I live on Winthrop now and have done so for the past seven years. The drug dealing, etc… was an issue when we first moved here. It is not much of an issue anymore. I wish people would stop misrepresenting the street I live on.

        • GranvilleBeauty

Profiling isnt cool when you happen to be the race of those being profiled and you are a law abiding citizen. What makes this funny is, the two times that my condo has been broken in to, the perp was white….AND, all the drug deals that I have seen happen, the dealer was white… thats why profiling doesnt work because it targets black men…

          • Turbo60640

I’m referring to profiling as it relates to the inability of the police to question people of ANY race lurking in the area who are clearly up to no good.

          • GranvilleBeauty

but they dont question ANY race.. that wouldnt be a profile. How can you tell the difference between someone who is standing on the corner, being up to no good, versus someone on the corner waiting for their wife to meet them there..

        • Tread

It’s also a shady landlord problem. There are a handful of landlords in the area that will rent to anyone without any sort of background check, etc.

Meghan, I lived in the neighborhood for 3 years and regularly saw drug deals going down on Winthrop and Kenmore between Bryn Mawr and Foster. Just because you close your eyes to it, doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist.

          • MD

I just wanted to agree with you, Tread. I don’t live in this immediate area so can’t comment about its safety (I’m west of Glenwood at Foster), but when I lived at Clark/Ridge a few years back, I saw all sorts of sketchy things that I brought to the attention of my building mates – kids selling crack rocks on our front porch in broad daylight, gang fights, guy beating up his girlfriend in the street out front, drug dealer getting arrested in our front yard, people doing drugs in their cars parked out front, etc. They all insisted I was crazy, that none of that actually happened and that we lived on an awesome block. I think the disconnect there is just a matter of how observant people are; I watch people like a hawk so I see things others don’t. Meghan probably just hasn’t honed in on people to the degree you have.

          • meghan

Oh I call police all the time MD. I have a dog and walk it regularly and I am very observant. But on that block, it is rare to see that stuff. I’m not saying it doesn’t happen. You admit you don’t know the area so maybe let someone who actually lives there state facts. It’s not crime free but something like this is thankfully not indicative of that block.

          • MD

If your block is so great, why are you calling the police “all the time”? For what it’s worth, I didn’t attempt to state facts about your area; I only commented on my experience with people living in the same area seeing different things (this couldn’t have been more explicit either – see my 2nd sentence).

      • kenmore res

pretty much this. i have live nearby with a kid and this barely even registers on my radar

      • Claire Zulkey

Thank you! See you tonight maybe at the social at Cedar Lot.

    • Scott Cooper

I think an obvious part of the solution is to post more police at the L stops. If they do nothing more than monitor the comings and goings of the people. I think that one of the reasons these corridors are hot spot is because of the artery of transportation. It’s the same way on Howard Avenue and at the Morse L stop. Up the police presence at the stops and I think you’ve got a step in the right direction.

    • mimih

I’ve lived on Kenmore since 1985 and it is absolutely UNTRUE that Winthrop and Kenmore are unchecked open air drug markets OR that shootings and murders are the norm. We aren’t immune to what’s going on in our city and world; Winthrop & Kenmore have always gotten a bad rap because we are the most diverse part of the ward. It’s challenging but wonderful because everybody is here. Mostly we all live normal lives. Maybe you came from the suburbs and want everyone to be alike and look alike! Ifso, be our guest and move back! They are safer but when something happens there it is usually outta sight horrendous! BTW, I wanna be as safe as anybody . As for the Alderman, I’m glad he tries to represent ALL of his constituents. Obviously, you haven’t checked out all the proactive things he is doing both this summer and last summer, along with considering the Lakewood Balmoral crowd. Let’s be real.

  • GranvilleBeauty

I was listening to the police scanner when this went down. If the police cant get the gang situation corrected on the south and west sides, why would they be able to do miracles on the north side… We should be happy its these two street and not the entire neighborhood.

  • smokey

Any idea of the victims name or address ? FYI some years back there were 2 Massive Drug busts very close – one across from american nursing home on broadway above the auto shop- the other in an auto shop in the alley behind the old lauries pizza.

  • FedUp

Every time someone gets shot the Alderman says he has reached out to the police, blah blah blah. While the problem is obviously more than just a neighborhood issue, maybe it is time for him to come up with a new response. To the commenter saying his is “very aware and active” on this issue. I don’t know if that is true, but what I do know is that his “awareness and activity” on this issue, be it high or low, has failed. It seems to me the problem is getting worse, not better.

  • Chgosaint

I lived at 5217, 12 years ago. I was there for less than 6 months. Newly renovated condos at the time. It was crime infested then and it is good to see that nothing has changed. The alderman truly does care more about speed bumps. stop lights and stop signs than about safety. Uptown crime rolls into Edgewater and the cops do nothing.

    • MD

My best friend was living at 5225 about 6 years ago. Somebody was fatally shot in the head out front of her place. Some people just refuse to believe they live in a bad area, until the violence affects them directly.

    • Turbo60640

I lived in the 5300 block of Winthrop for 7 years. The neighborhood was respectable when I moved in, but over the last 2-3 years it got much worse VERY quickly. Large groups of “youths” brawling on the street in the afternoons, homeless people setting up a daily junk bazaar outside of the Berwyn L stop, constant drug dealing on Winthrop and around Ollie’s (plus the gang fighting and shootings that go along with the drug trade). Most people in the area refuse to acknowledge the ever-present criminal element, or even admit there is a problem. I finally had enough and got the hell out.

  • Lite Man

I live in Edgewater and I find it to be a wonderful place to live. When you live in the city there are going to be some levels of crime but I don’t feel the least unsafe here. The citizens are involved and the police are responsive. I’ve lived here for about four years and this is the second shooting I’ve heard of. However the police do seem to be less concerned with the black people here. In general they look at us like dirt and I know I am a good guy who loves his neighborhood and appreciate my good neighbors but the police are a bit skiddish towards us. It’s still better than the south side where I am considered too white. I wish Chicago could just lose the SKIN GAME all together. ENOUGH ALREADY!

  • D.Roc

I know you can’t go back but why did Chicago miss it’s chance to squelch gangs back in the 70’s and 80’s? They let the problem grow and now it’s almost too big to handle. I live at the 5600 block of N. Winthrop. The red line can be shady, but most of the time there is a police presence. Still, I see a lot of groups of unsavory characters, and I have seen what looked like a “transaction” on several occasions. We’re getting to a point where we can no longer say that the gun violence is limited to the SW side. It’s now alive and well in our own back yard. Now what are we going to do about it?

  • AE

I live only a few buildings from where this happened. You can’t blanket an entire street as bad. It’s Chicago. Things change by block. This area from Foster to Berwyn is filled with condo owners and several large retirement buildings whose residents routinely walk this area together and hang out on corners or in front of buildings chatting. Unless they’re the drug dealers some are talking about, this area is nothing like what was openly seen around Winona and south a few years back.
