Edgewater is seeing a surge in new businesses opening around the neighborhood. Broadway Ave. is ground zero for many of them. One of the most anticipated openings is a new upscale wine bar at 5959 N. Broadway.

The name of the establishment is Income Tax and they are scheduled to open by early December. Owner Nelson Fitch has been slowly transforming the 1,700-square-foot space over the last year. Their focus will be on specialty wines and craft cocktails.

There will also be a food menu which will feature interpretations of classic dishes that compliment the wine regions they are focusing on: Spain, France, Italy and Germany. Executive Chef Ryan Henderson (Alder, Empellon Cocina, Momofuku, Maple & Ash) will be at the helm of Income Tax’s kitchen preparing food that is “flexible, serving those looking for a quick bite to eat after their commute, a full meal, or a few plates to share.”

In a press release, Income Tax General Manager Collin Moody said about the bar/food menus, “One of the core ideas is that wine belongs on the table. It sounds really simple, but there’s a lot of wine that does not go well with food; wine that’s designed to be tasted, not drank.”

Many residents are still wondering how they came up with the business’s name. According to the release, “The idea for Income Tax, whose name references both the desire to organically blend in with neighborhood storefronts, as well as a classic cocktail in the martini family, arose when Fitch was working at nearby Independent Spirits, a local shop known for its selection of wines and small batch spirits.”

When fitch decided to open the wine bar, it was fitting he open it next door to his muse, Independent Spirits. Better yet, the business would operate in the community he loves – Edgewater. Fitch told EVB, “Edgewater is a community that really cares about the businesses that come in. Customers who are happy at Independent Spirits will be happy at Income Tax.”
