Trumbull Development’s Closing Delayed, Property Could Become A Non-Charter School

trumbull2Trumbull school’s auditorium has seen a lot of drama through the years, now the redevelopment plans for the building is also seeing its fair share.

After Timeline backed out of a deal to occupy the first floor of the shuttered school building in September, the future of the project was unclear. Svigos, who is the contract purchaser of the Trumbull property, is scrambling to find another tenant for the theater space.

Last week, Alderman O’Connor put out a statement announcing that the Board of Education will still honor the contract with Svigos, with plans to close with them in early November, 2016. He Said,”It is the Board of Education’s position that they do not want the expense of heating and the liability of carrying the closed Trumbull building on their real estate portfolio over the winter.”

Once Svigos closes on the property, “they will be legally limited to use the building in two ways, namely a theater and dwelling units or a private non-charter school.”

However, the possibility of a charter school occupying the space as opposed to a theatre group along with 49 dwelling units is causing a set back. Yesterday the Alderman said in an email that the Board of Education would have to vote on whether to add a non-charter private school as a potential use.

Because the next Board meeting is not scheduled until December 7th, the closing will be pushed back to December.

“At my insistence, it remains Svigos’ plan to landmark both the interior and the exterior of the building.  They plan to build 49 apartments and to engage a theater group to occupy area on the first floor,” said O’Connor.  “Although Svigos is currently talking to a number of theater groups, they are open to engaging with additional groups should anyone have any thoughts or ideas in that vein.”
