A woman was fatally shot at the busy intersection of 5900 N. Ridge in Edgewater Monday morning.

The 21-year-old woman, who was driving her SUV with a unidentified male passenger, stopped the vehicle at a red light around 12:55 a.m. It was then that a man in a grey sedan pulled along side of the couple, got out of his car and opened fire on the vehicle.

The woman then drove north on Ridge another block. The SUV was finally found at 6107 N. Ridge Ave.

The woman, who police say was not the intended target, was shot in the head and was taken to St. Francis Hospital in Evanston. She was pronounced dead at 1:35 a.m.

The slain woman’s name has been released as Karina Soria-Bautista. According to a DNAinfo article, the woman is survived by her five-year-old son, parents and four brothers.

Soria-Bautista, of the 4900 block of North Rockwell, was out earlier that evening celebrating just days before her 22nd birthday.

The passenger, who was not hurt in the shooting, was Soria-Bautista’s boyfriend and is a documented gang member.

The victim’s family had met the man for the first time just days prior to the incident. Soria-Bautista is believed to have no gang affiliations.

No one is currently in custody and police have not released a description of the attacker. If you have any information, please contact Area North Detectives at 312-744-8263.
