Argyle Street Reaches Milestone As 2-Way Traffic Resumes Tomorrow

argyle-2With construction taking over Agyle Street for the past two years, the work is finally just about over. Though located just outside Edgewater but still located in the 48th Ward, Argyle will once again be open to to two-way traffic and to parking between Winthrop Avenue and Sheridan Road tomorrow.

However, in an announcement from Alderman Harry Osterman, he did mention that Argyle will be closed to traffic tonight from Broadway to the CTA tracks so that final pavers can be installed. The 48th Ward office expects this section of Argyle to reopen on Friday August 12.

The Alderman said in the statement, “All businesses remain open, and free parking for customers is being provided, as before, in the lot at 5026 N. Broadway.” He Added, “Thank you for your patience and input during this ground-breaking shared-street project.”

When finished, the Argyle Shared Street Streetscape will will become the City of Chicago’s first street to be designed based on ‘shared street’ design guidelines. It will create a plaza-like feel by raising the street and eliminating curbs. The new streetscape design will include permeable unit pavers, infiltration planers, large pedestrian areas that allow for sidewalk cafes, planters, and community identifiers.

The weekly Argyle Night Market will continue from 5 p.m. -9 p.m. tonight between Kenmore and Sheridan.
