Woman Charged In Recent Edgewater/Uptown TCF Bank Robberies

973323_1280x720A woman has been arrested and charged in a recent string of bank robberies at TCF Banks on the Northside of Chicago, according to the FBI. She was allegedly turned in by two relatives and two friends who called in with the tips.

Cynthia Wonsey, 45, of the 6000 block of N. Winthrop Ave. is currently behind bars suspected of the thefts.  She was ordered held on Friday by Federal Judge Young B. Kim.

The robber who was referred to as the “Uptown Beach Bandit”, gained notoriety because of the large floppy hats and oversized sunglasses she wore during the incidents. She is accused of taking $550 from the Edgewater TCF branch inside Jewel at 5343 N. Broadway on Aug. 14 at 3:52 p.m. The bandit also struck on Aug. 5, at the TCF bank at 3531 N. Broadway in Lakeview and on August 22 at the TCF Bank at 4355 N. Sheridan in Uptown.

During the robberies the bandit gave the teller a note that said she was armed and that an accomplice was watching close by, also with a gun. According to the criminal complaint, the woman was given a tracking device with the money taken from the robbery in Edgewater, but it had failed. The bandit fled the scene in a taxi that was waiting for her.

If convicted of the crimes, Wonsey could face up to 20 years in prison.
