Third Loyola Greek Organization In The Past Year Suspended For Violations That Include Hazing

A Loyola sorority has been temporarily suspended over reports of misconduct to its members including hazing, bullying and harassment. It is the third Greek organization at the university in the last year in trouble for such violations.

Loyola University Chicago’s Alpha Sigma Alpha sorority chapter has been prohibited from participating in all organizational business and activities on or off campus pending a review of the allegations. According to the Loyola Phoenix, The Office of Student Conduct and Conflict Resolution (OSCCR) will conduct an investigation beginning next week.

After several complaints were issued from an incident that occurred on the evening of February 15, the sorority is accused of hazing tactics and bullying which may have included alcohol.  Furthermore, the OSCCR warned about retaliation by any group directed towards individuals that have reported the abuse.

Strong accusations leveled against a Loyola Greek organization also occurred two other times in the past year. Last September, Loyola’s chapter of Alpha Kappa Psi fraternity was suspended until Jan. 7, 2019 after an investigation that found the group guilty of hazing and alcohol violations. In March of 2017, the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity received a three year suspension for hazing incidents.

Loyola issued a statement to WGN-TV saying, “The University takes all reports of bullying, harassment, hazing, and other misconduct within registered student organizations very seriously and will attempt to work with the leadership and members of the Gamma Lambda chapter to promptly and appropriately address any misconduct that is substantiated.”

Loyola University also encourages any student to report any additional information or concerns about this matter via email at osccr@luc.edu or file a report through their EthicsLine.
