Steep Theatre Company Keeps On Truckin’ With Its Newest Play

the-few-2It’s a hopeful ending for Edgewater Steep Theatre Co.’s newest but dark play “The Few,” about a newspaper that changes its management, and then its content, in order to survive.

Written by Samuel D. Hunter and directed by Steep ensemble member Brad Akin, this Y2K-era yarn focuses on Bryan, who started a newspaper for long haul truck drivers but abandoned it and his girlfriend, QZ, four years earlier.

When Bryan returns, it’s to a salty and profit-focused QZ, who has transformed “The Few” into a newspaper primarily focused on personal ads. She’s also angry and confused as to why Bryan left her.

As Bryan works around QZ to try to retake control of the newspaper he still owns, he battles Matthew, one of the paper’s employees, who is more focused on producing a newspaper than on arguing about who controls it.

“The Few” features Steep Theatre’s Artistic Director Peter Moore, who plays Bryan; Travis Coe, who plays Matthew; and Dana Black, who plays QZ.

The sparse cast aptly captures the travails of a small newspaper and its staff trying to make it in the middle of nowhere.

“We’ve long admired Samuel’s work and we’re thrilled to have the opportunity to introduce one of his plays to Chicago audiences,” Moore said about playwright Hunter. “His work really speaks to us and our attraction to stories of ordinary people in truly extraordinary circumstances.”

“The Few” runs Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m. until May 21. Sunday performances are scheduled for May 1, May 8 and May 15 at 3 p.m.

Tickets range from $10 to $35. For reservations, call 773-649-3186 or visit www.steeptheatre.com.

Steep Theatre is located at 1115 W. Berwyn Ave., next to the Berwyn Red Line stop and within blocks of the No. 92, No. 36, No. 146, No. 147 and No. 151 buses.
