Some of the best women in powerlifting are going to be converging in Edgewater for a USA Powerlifting tournament that will be held at a neighborhood Gym this month.

The USA Powerlifting 2019 Illinois Women’s Raw Open will be hosted by B&W Gym at 5920 N. Ridge on Sunday Feb. 24. Weigh-In is at 8:30 a.m. and the competition starts at 10:30 a.m. The 9,000 sq. ft. gym has been serving the area since 1978 and is known for its no-frills approach to lifting.

Gym owner Dennis Brady, who used to be a Juvenile Court probation officer and past football/strength coach for Lane Tech, is a champion powerlifter himself and has been dedicated to the sport. He has personally racked up many titles and championships including the 1995 world bench press championship and the 1995 and 1996 world masters championship.

B&W Gym has sponsored over 100 bodybuilding and powerlifting competitions since they opened. Brady admits that they took a break from the women’s tournament scene for several years, but reinvigorated the program after getting so many good, new women lifters at the gym.

“This contest is unique because it’s women only,” said Brady. “The meet is open to all women. I have always been a big fan of women’s lifting. We actually ran the Women’s world championship here in Chicago in 2003.”

The tournament this month will feature leading females in the sport including many contestants from the area. So far, 43 Midwest powerlifters will be competing including entrees from Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Missouri and Kentucky.

The women will be competing for unique awards in 8 different weight classes as well as the top three overall and a team event. They will also be handing out special awards for teen, junior (20-23) and masters (40+) women.

“The biggest misconception is that if women lift heavy weights, they will start to look like a man,” Brady Added. “But for me the biggest triumph is to see a women become more self confident as they become stronger.”

All entries for the tournament must be received by Feb 10 and start out at $50 ($30 each additional division). Public admission to the event is $10. For more info go to B&W Gym’s website.
