Whole Foods Awards Edgewater’s Care For Real A Game-Changing Gift That Really Delivers

Care For Real, Edgewater’s food pantry for those in need, has been serving the area for 49 years and has steadily seen the need for their services increase over time. Since the COVID-19 pandemic took hold in the area over six months ago, the organization has received a surge in new clients.

At Care For Real (5339 N. Sheridan) every little bit counts. So it was joyfully announced this week that area grocer Whole Foods (who has a store at 6009 N Broadway) will be awarding them a huge gift that will keep on giving through the years.

The organization is among 21 community-based food rescue and redistribution programs in 18 markets across the United States and Canada that will receive new refrigerated vans from whole Foods Nourishing our communities program to help carry out their missions. On top of that, the vans will be used to pick up 20,000 pounds of food donated by grocery partners each week. That means each van in its 10-year lifespan will be able to provide 182 million meals to those in need.

“Whole Foods Market has been a generous partner to Care for Real for more than 15 years,” said Care for Real’s new Executive Director Gregory Gross. “We pick up donated food, including fresh produce, baked goods, pre-packaged prepared foods and more, from area stores several times a week. This food really makes a difference to the more than 6,000 people we help each month.”

Whole Foods’ Nourishing Our Communities program helps kick-off  Hunger Action Month. It was created in order to expand capacity and capability for community-based food rescue organizations to move food from where it’s available to where it’s needed most. The company believes that hyper-local food organizations like Care For Real are needed to ensure that food gets to the consumer, especially those who need it the most.

According to Care For Real, they already have hunger vans that rescue food from area wholesalers and retailers. The new van will allow them to provide significantly more food to the community.
