Goddess And Grocer Officially Opens Today, Signature Rainbow Cakes Will Benefit Pulse Nightclub Victims

rainbow-cake-1Though new to the Andersonville neighborhood at 5318 N. Clark St., Goddess and Grocer and Goddess and Baker have been a regular fixture for years in the Chicago area. In that time, they have amassed a loyal following including many dedicated LGBT customers.

So it was no wonder that when the goddess herself (owner Debbie Sharpe) heard about the horrific attack at the Pulse LGBT nightclub in Orlando that took the lives of 49 innocent victims, she took action.

All Goddess and Grocer and Goddess and the Baker locations will be donating $1 for each slice and $10 from each whole rainbow cake sold from June 13 through the Chicago Pride Parade on Sunday, June 26. The proceeds will go to the gofund me page that’s been set up at: https://www.gofundme.com/PulseVictimsFund

“We have always embraced all members of all communities and worked over the past 25 years with the LGBT community,” Sharpe told EVB. “I think members of the LGBT community feel really comfortable working for The Goddess and that reflects on our customer base. We have many members of the LGBT community in executive positions within the company.”

Sharpe along with head pastry chef Alysha Boze make the rainbow cakes at their kitchens on Chicago’s west side. They consist of seven layers in all the rainbow colors, which are sandwiched together and smothered with lemon buttercream. Sharpe stated, “everybody is attracted to their brightness, the cultural significance of the rainbow flag and it actually tastes delicious.”

When we asked Sharpe about her thoughts on the excitement about the new Goddess and Grocer in Andersonville (which officially opens today), she said, “I think our new tagline says it all – Hello, Andersonville, you look shockingly good!”
