Edgewater Gets Epic on Garage Sales

epicIt’s an epic event!  The 20th year of the Edgewater Neighborhood Garage Sale may very well see its largest turnout yet!  Six block clubs will participate. It is  expected that nearly 200 hundred households will be part of the sale, up from 144 last year. “The annual neighborhood garage sale has evolved into a tradition for Edgewater.  It always takes place on the first Saturday of June and so far been very lucky because as far back as I can remember, we’ve usually had beautiful weather,” says Lynn Pierce, Coordinator of the EPIC (Every Person is Concerned) Block Club.

When asked how long she’s been helping organize the affair, Lynn offered a long and hearty laugh – as if recalling its span and growth gives her heart a tickle.  She recalls that, together with the BARGE Neighbors Community Organization, EPIC has been organizing the annual neighborhood garage sale since its dawn in the summer of 1995.  Over the years, other block clubs have joined in. Participants this year include the Edgewater Glen Association, Edgewater North Neighbors, and TAHBS Citizens Council and the Edgewater Beach Apartments co-op at 5555 N. Sheridan (the pink building), which will set up its sellers along its driveway.  St. Gertrude’s Church is uniting vendors for the first time this year in the parking lot at Granville and Glenwood.  The owner of Barr Funeral Home on Broadway is opening up his parking lot at Magnolia and Granville to Edgewater North Neighbors sellers. The growth is due in large part to the convenient way in which sellers can join the fun.

Since the first year, an arrangement was struck with the Department of Streets and Sanitation.  Rather than each vendor having to go to the office and request the required garage sale permit, the coordinator of each block club applies on behalf of all of the participating sellers, making it easy breezy.  Unfortunately, if a seller does not belong to one of the participating block clubs, they would have to individually go to Streets and Sanitation and request a permit – although there may be some exceptions.

The 20th Annual Edgewater Neighborhood Garage Sale is on for Saturday, June 7, 2014 from 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m., no rain date, and boundaries east of Broadway to Sheridan: Bryn Mawr to Thorndale; boundaries west of Broadway to Clark:  Ridge to Granville.  An address list of the participating sellers will be available at each vendor, so find that first garage sale and learn about all the rest!

Look for Lynn Pierce at the 5930 block of North Lakewood, where she’s been living for 28 years.   “Based on my observations, I think the nicest people in the world live in Edgewater,” she cheerfully declares.
