Carson’s Ribs Building On Ridge To Be Demolished And Replaced By New Starbucks Store

starbucks-2After waiting a little over a decade for someone to develop the old Carson’s Ribs property at 5970 N. Ridge, area residents will most likely see construction soon on the property. That work will entail the demolition of the current structure which will make way for construction and establishment of a single story commercial building with a one-lane drive-through facility.

Residents within 250 feet of the property received a letter detailing the plans from Richard Klawiter of DLA Piper LLP, an authorized representative of the 5970 N. Ridge owner, Crossroads Ridge LLC which is based out of Schaumburg.

Nathan (who preferred to go by his first name), who was one of the people that received the letter, was both surprised and excited by its arrival. He said, “The old space has been an eyesore more than anything. The Clark and Ridge corner has always been a turbulent place for businesses. We’ve seen some great ones come in (Gaztro-Wagon, for example) only to not find much success. Knowing how busy this stretch is there has always been hope that something more substantial would take this space.”

The letters were sent out in accordance with the requirements for a special use application under the Chicago Zoning Ordinance. According to the letter, Crossroads Ridge filed the application around December 19, 2016 to allow for the development of the property.

Crossroads Development Partners officially purchased the site a two years ago for less than half the price it sold for back in 2006, $1.2 million to be exact. Michael Nortman, principal at Crossroads, said he bought the property for its future potential including the high traffic presence and proximity to the future Metra Station.

According to the 40th Ward Alderman’s office during a phone call, the “intended use” of the new storefront will be a Starbucks location.

Nathan said, “While Starbucks are a dime a dozen, their cafe-like ambiance will bring a much needed injection of life into the area that is mostly car washes and random shops. I’m excited to see what kind of life and potential future business it brings to the area. ”

This will be Edgewater’s fourth Starbucks location. The three other stores are located at 5300 N Clark, 1070 W Bryn Mawr and 6350 North Broadway. There has been no timeline as of yet as to when construction will begin.
