Police are actively investigating an incident that occurred in the early morning hours on Wednesday after an anti-Gay slur was spray painted in black underneath a window that displayed a rainbow flag.

The graffiti which contained the word “F—-T” was discovered when area neighbors woke in the morning yesterday. An image of the crime was then posted on the Rogers Park Neighborhood News Facebook group page soon after.

The building that was tagged is located on the 1400 block of W. Arthur in Rogers Park, one block outside the Edgewater neighborhood. Police said the tag was sprayed somewhere between  8 p.m. Tuesday and 7 a.m. Wednesday after a report was filed with CPD.

The incident occurred within hours after a 22-year-old area resident Kartik Kulkarni was arrested by authorities on the 6400 block of N. Greenview shortly after Midnight on Wednesday.  Police were responding to a neighbor who reported tags being sprayed in the alley. When police arrived at the scene they confronted Kulkari who had paint on his clothes and skin which matched the color of the paint that was used.

Kulkarni has been charged with two counts of misdemeanor criminal defacement of property with paint. Though he is currently not being blamed in connection with the anti-gay tag, Area North detectives are still looking into the hate crime.
