Alderman Warns About Neighborhood Phone Scam

scamIn a statement released today from Alderman Osterman’s office, they warn the community to be aware of a phone scam that could happen to area residents. The calls appear to be local but they may be actually coming from Puerto Rico.

The scam involves individuals who call the victim and claim that a relative has been in a car accident. They then ask for the victim to wire money to them for medical bills in order to release that relative. They also threaten the victim that they will harm that relative unless they get a payment. In some cases they say they are a Latin King gang member. In other instances they try to get names of the victim’s real relatives in order to scam them as well.

Their plan is to get as much information from the victim as they can and keep them on the phone long enough to ensure they have wired the money to Puerto Rico.

The Alderman’s office wants you to be aware of this crime and alert family and friends. Report any suspicious phone calls. Dial 911 if you learn of any suspicious activity or please contact 48th ward public safety liaison Marko Zaric at 773-784-5277 or Marko@48thward.org.
