Multiple Vehicle Thefts Reported In Edgewater Area Including Armed Carjacking Last Week

Several vehicle thefts that occurred in the 20th District (Lincoln) in December of last year into the beginning of 2021 has prompted the Chicago Police Department to issue community alerts. Now it was learned that an armed carjacking took place last week in Edgewater as well.

According to police, a person was approached by three individuals on the 1000 block of W. Hollywood at 8:40 p.m. on January 12. The offenders displayed a handgun, stole the victim’s car and fled in an unknown direction. Authorities provided no other information.

The incident comes on the heels of a CPD warning on January 5 concerning several vehicle thefts in the 20th District. Though the release did not provide specific information on each crime, they did say that the suspects observed a running motor before commandeering the cars. The times and locations include:

• 5700 block of N. Glenwood Ave. on January 2, 2021 at 5:00 p.m.
• 5700 block of N. Lincoln Ave. on January 1, 2021 at 4:45 p.m.
• 5400 block of N. Western Ave. on December 31, 2020 at 3:30 p.m.
• 5100 block of N. Lincoln Ave. on December 31, 2020 at 9:10 a.m.
• 5000 block of N. Ashland Ave. on December 29, 2020 at 9:00 a.m.
• 5000 block of N Lincoln Ave. on December 27, 2020 at 6:50 p.m.

On January 7, Police issued another warning concerning an armed crew working the area recently. Using a white Jeep Cherokee to commit the crimes, They hit several neighborhoods including Lakeview and Lincoln Park.

Soon after that warning was released, two carjackings were reported on January 7 in nearby Rogers Park. At 2:27 p.m that day witnesses say a man exited a white Jeep and pushed a man to the ground as he was getting out of his vehicle on the 6600 block of N. Damen. The offender then climbed into the car, sped away and eventually crashed near Pratt and Ridge. The suspect fled the scene on foot.

Then at around 6 p.m. that same day, a man’s black 2005 Volvo was stolen after he was approached by two men with handguns on the 7700 block of N. Ashland. The suspects sped away down a nearby alley.

The individuals involved in the Rogers Park incidents are described as two Black males, late teens or early 20’s,  and standing around 5’6” tall. One wore a black hat, black sweater, and mask.
