Burglars Arrested After Hitting Same Edgewater Building A Second Time

Carter and Stokes, CPD

Two men were arrested this week after trying to break into an Edgewater apartment building they burglarized just two months prior.

Chicago police responded to a burglary in progress call on Sept. 29 and arrested both 43-year-old Patrick Carter and 29-year-old Douglas Stokes as they attempted to break into a building on the 5400 block of N. Kenmore. That is when one of the officers recognized the men.

Surveillance video from a prior burglary at the same complex on August 5 was shared with police. According to them, Carter can be seen breaking into the building while Stokes and a third man acted as a lookout.

Once the three men gained illegal entrance they proceeded to the mailroom. There they stole an undisclosed number of packages and then exited through the back door.

Because the footage from the Aug. 5 incident was distributed to local police, the responding officers were able to connect both Carter and Stokes with the previous crime during their arrest on Tuesday. There was no further information about the identity of the third suspect.

Carter and Stokes are being charged with felony burglary and theft. Both men have four previous felony convictions behind them.

Carter and Stokes went before Cook County Judge John Lyke this week. Stokes’s bail was set at $20k while Carter’s bail was set at $40k.
