Possible Mumps Case Reported At Helen C. Peirce School

mumpsA case of mumps is suspected in a child that attends Helen C. Peirce School at 1423 W Bryn Mawr Ave in Edgewater. Parents at the school were notified and authorities are investigating the case to avoid further spread of the virus.

Chicago Public Schools put out a statement saying, “CPS is supporting the Chicago Department of Public Health as it investigates a potential case of mumps. A diagnosis has not been confirmed, and we will work with the Department of Public Health to institute any necessary precautionary measures.”

Four cases of the highly contagious disease were reported recently.  The mumps have affected three children at Barrington High School and another unrelated case in the Northwest suburb.

Initial signs and symptoms often include fever, muscle pain, headache, and feeling tired. The virus is spread by mucus and saliva. Though there is a vaccine that has eliminated the virus by 90% in the US, mumps is more common in developing countries worldwide.
